944 Difficult to fill with gas

I have a 1990 944 S2 Cabriolet that is extremely difficult to fill with fuel. The pump nozzle keeps kicking off no matter how slow you try to fill.

Anyone heard of such a problem? I can stick a 1/2-inch vinyl hose down the filler tube about a foot before is comes to a springy stop. Is the an anti-siphon coil spring down there causing too much restriction?

about 1 foot in is where the rubber hose ends and the rubber coupling bends and enters the tank. Make sure your vents are hooked up and not clogged.

Are the vent line(s) only accessed from the trunk? I see what looks like a rounded access cover under the trunk-hinge area that is screwed and pretty well weather-sealed in place. Before I attempt to peel that cover out I want to know that it will lead me somewhere useful. Thanks for your input, AznDrgn.

Anti-siphon coil spring? I did not know our cars were equiped with one. How exactly does it work?...

I find with a lot of gas stations, the angle of the bend in the nozzle doesn't match the bend in the neck of my tank, and it sprays right against the bottom of the tube, and keeps shutting off.
I have to only put it in an inch, maybe 2 or else it will shut off every 5 or 10 seconds.

If it's in the center of the hatch area, thats access to the fuel gauge sender.

same for me too. Put it in only about 2 inches, and you should be fine.

Thanks you all for advice. I'll try the "partial-insertion" technique and let you know what happens.

As for the anti-siphon coil spring, Zero10, it would be a conical spring with the large end big enough to hold it in place in the fill tube and the small end tight enough to keep a hose from fitting through. I've never seen or heard of one being factory-installed, and with the unleaded-nozzle fitting on all newer cars, it would be impossible to install as a DIY item.
