Just got done changing the slave in my apt parking lot

Wow, what a job. It's not that it's a hard job, just that when you dont have the stuff that makes the job easy, it can be a pain. I was using the scissor jack and laying on a towel (not much help really on that dang ashphalt). Oh and in case anyone needs to know for future reference, the starter bolts on an 84 are 19mm, the starter cable is 13mm along with the bolts for the slave. The hardline that runs to the master and feeds the slave is a 12mm flare nut wrench (not an 11mm like I was told). Oh, and dont bother trying one of those 6.99 autozone one person bleeder kits, they suck. The magnet fell off 2 minutes into use and i had to tape it on and the bottle is very small so you have to empty it frequently (which can be rather bothersome when you're 6'5 and under the car. Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice and help with this as it was the first time I've done it alone!

Garage
I remember when my slave cylinder died. I stored my car for the first winter in a pole barn that had a gravel floor. 1" dia. gravel, come to think of it it was more like a rock floor. When I went to get it in spring the pedal went to the floor. I changed out the slave while laying on that darn rock floor and 40 degrees outside. That was the first time I turned a wrench a the 944. Ahhhhh the memories.....

Glad to know yours went well.

For what it's worth, i would never lay under the car using a scissor jack.. but I guess I hold my life with more worth than some.

Oh it's all good AE1969, i appreaciate the response anyways. Always get to have those fun times when the cars break down. I remember changing out the radiator in my 66 Mustang in a Holiday Inn parking lot at 10:30 at night on my way home from Pensacola. Oh well, you do what you gotta do. And as far as the scissor jack, I wasn't thrilled about being under there with just that jack holding the car up, but poor college kids gotta use what they got! Just another one for the books!

Just throw a log or something under the car to protect you being squished like an orange if the jack fails. Don't use a cinder building block. Those will split if they get smacked with a load like a car dropping.

Use some text books, I (also being a poor college student) find them very useful when it comes to learning...about how to fix stuff underneath your car.

Actually I've never done that. I just picked up a cheap jack and jackstands at walmart for like 40 bucks

I just finished my clutch job in a parking lot. Changed the tans, clutch, rear main seal, pilot bearing, added a short shift and such. I bought 2 jack stands and borrowed a jack and stands from a friend. Between dodging Campus Saftey and class and work it took me 3 weeks to get the job done. But now it runs great and smooth and I love it. I am now famous for being insane enought to change a clutch on a car in K lot. Anything is possible.

That's nuts. A clutch in a parking lot, geez. You have my sympothies for that job. Our security here was giving me a hard time about it as well and the cops even came and told me I couldn't do that in the parking lot. But you are right, anything is possible and you gotta do what you gotta do!
