944 Creative Engineering part 3 (?) . or 4......

Well, I'm sure everyone is aware of Creative Engineering Part 1 & 2 ..

well, today I'm driving to the beach, and driving rather spirited alongside a historic Cobra and what do I see by the side of the road a boroke down 944.

So, I pull over and back up to give the guy a hand.

Turns out this was a fairly new purchase and he had rebuilt the motor and all, however it was stuck on the side of the road a.la. "no workey"

As I'm asking the guy what was the matter... what should my eyes see ?????

Is that LAMP CORD connected to the battery ????
Is the AFM cover off and all corroded ???
Is that a 16 gauge wire with a 1.5" aligator clip ATTACHED TO THE CENTER OF THE DISTRIBUTOR ????

I was afraid to start looking for socks !!!!

So I figure, give the guy a jump start and all will be OK, and my helping out a fellow P-Car fullfilled ..

I have a main battery (up front) and a secondard battery (right rear wheelwell) and I hooked up jumper cables (his) to the rear battery (thats 2 batteries) . So then it wouldn't start ...
I'm thinking the 3 strands of wire from the lamp cord may not be sufficient to carry enough juice ( Ya' think ? ). .. . .

So then I break out my " Jump start kit " which is a battery and cables in a small yellow package and hook that up as well...... still no go

Then I notice that the battery terminal isn't even tight

So I open up my toolbox, and I can't find my 10mm wrench and have to use 2 cresent wrenches instead ... still no go !!!

So I end up driving the guy to the rest stop about 1/2 a mile up the road to wait for his buddy. If there weren't electrical issues to begin with, I would have stayed and got the guy mobile, but there was too much rigging to deal with.

Oh, and the whole time he's saying he needs a new altenator....yeah, right, maybe it's the aligator clip

I wish I had my camera

anyway, I just had to post this ( appologies to the guy as well )
Of course I wrote down Pelican Parts url for him as well as that "other board"

In my wildest dreams, I never thought that I would see lamp cord on a 944

Don

Not so much a car, rather a future garden ornament.

I would laugh so much if someone points him to Gerber for repairs...

Largely because I know you guys will tear into him and it's fun to imagine.

he bought the car from some guy in Oceanside. I think it's the same guy that pieces P-Cars together.

It did have new T-Belt and it looked correct (no cover of course)

He said he paid $1500 for it .
I voiced my opinion

Why someone would think they need a new altenator when they have a lamp cord going to the starter and a chinsey aligator clip coming off the coil to the distro ?????

No cover on the AFM OR timing belt?!? Is this guy NUTS? I wouldn't even start my car without either of them firmly in place

Actually, I have a few customers that do not use the belt covers at all - front or rear.

certainly makes belt changes a snap.

Shudder to think what would happen if you had a PS or alternator belt to break though.

That sounds foolhardy... seems like it would be too easy for water and road muck to get up there...
