Talking Red Blaze update

Well I finnaly got some time to work on the good old porsche. Got all the timming belts off, got the head off and the pistons out. Everything looks amazing very little wear and tear on a motor the sees redline 100 times a day. Very happy at how clean everything is, Im thinking it has to to with the mobil one oil and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner I run every 2 oil changes. I know its taking FOREVER to get her done, but hey its a hobby and the freaking thing is expensive to make FASTER . I have to take some measurements so I can order new rings for the 88 pistons i got and I also need to order rod bearings wrist pins and connecting rod bolts, gonna go the ARP rout for bolts and stuff. Other then that everything is going very smoothly and I have a box of goodies waiting to be installed, I cant wait. I will get you guys pics soon. Also I have made the decision to scap the singal fogger wet nitrous idea and go with a wet direct port 50-200hp adjusable system, its gonna be fun.

P.S Has anyone replace head studs in their 944? Im gonna install some ARP head studs but Im almost afraid to remove the old studs due to age, Guess Im just gonna cross my fingers.

P.S.S. what do you guys think, Should I just go crazy and have the crank lightened and knifed edge/cross drilled since Im in there.

Thanx guys,
fast924S

Nice progress. Maybe some day I'll actually see this car!! haha

I'd do the work to the crank while you're there. If you don't, you'll want to do it later and be kicking yourself bcz you have to pull the motor apart again.

IMO

Don't waste your money on ARP. Stock studs work well and work well enough on high HP turbo applications.

Take a look at the studs. The exhaust side ones usually look ok. The intake side ones may have some corrosion.

They can be a PAIN to remove. I had to use a huge pipe wrench and heat for a couple of them.

The stock studs can usually be re-used 3-5 times. I have only heard of a handfull of cases that have pulled stock studs while torquing.

ae1969, Thanx for the tip on the head studs, I think Im gonna leave them in then. But I do think it will be a good investment If I put new connecting rod studs/nuts in just to make me believe it will hold together better

New nuts for sure....

Studs.... probably not necessary.

.............again honestly ............. its not worth the bucks

Unless you have an 0-ringed head (ideally block). Then you can take advantage of a widefire headgasket.

On its own. Not really worth the money.

If you have ever seen a headgasket from a blown 944 turbo. You will see that the wide fire will not do anything to prevent it. If it leans out it will burn through a widefire just as quickly as a regular. An o-ring may save you from the occasional screw up (detonation)............ but it really won't prevent the inevitable results of bad tuning either.

An MLS gasket (metal layered) works well on high boost cars............but as I have found and others......... Coolant will leak through unless both surfaces (deck/head) are skimmed prior to application. It really is hit and miss with those things. (OH and they will burn through as well if they are leaned out)

..........so far my o-ringed head and regular gasket are holding so far. +23 psi now............. Pretty soon she should blow. Just waiting............waiting.

Maybe at this weekends event she will let go. we will see.

I have spent a few bucks in the name of science... (and so have others)............and you start seeing what works and what doesn't. If I were you I would find someone who is running an NA with Nitrous or has a race prepped engine and see what they did to get there....... and you will see if what they have tried actually works or not.
