Question about crank sensor

Okay, is a bad or out of adjustment crank sensor the only thing that can keep the tach needle from 'jumpin' while trying to start the car.

It's an '83, when I try to start it, it won't. When it turns over the tach needle doesn't move. Now, it had this problem before and I found that I didn't tighten the ref. pulse sensor. Tightened it and fixed the problem. The car then sat for several months. Some nights in -20 temps. Battery is completely dead. I get a good jump though and the starter turns fine but have same problem, won't start and the tach needle doesn't move. I Checked adjustment as best I could due to weather, i.e. moved it slightly closer (no difference) and then slightly further (again, no difference)

I've got access to an ocilliscope but not right now. Is it possible that something else could cause this that I could check with my Fluke 73???

Mine had the same problem. There was a bad connection between the wiring harness and the sensor connection. The solder holding the wires from the wiring harness to the connector parted - visually they looked ok, but on closer inspection you could see that there were cracks in the solder.

Yeah, I should probably disconnect the DME and check continuity before I rack my brains too much.

Also, it seems as though these models need plenty of battery to make all of the electronics work, and start. You might want to try swapping in a strong battery and see if it starts, or at least if that tach needle bounces.

That's another thing I was thinking about, although I've never had a problem before. . . . .but then again, I don't think the battery was ever completely dead. I'll take it down and let a friend put a quick charge on it.

I'll still need to re-check the adjustment of the sensors though since I was tinkering around with it. It's actually a beautiful, sunny and warm 38 today so maybe. . . . .
