Wacky camshaft timing?

Both flywheel TDC marks are lined up perfectly and the flywheel is locked but the camshaft sprocket mark is exactly 180 degrees out from its mark. She runs perfect. Why is this? Is it possible for the 944 camshaft to be 180 degrees out? If it is 180 degrees out will the balance shaft timing need to be altered when installing the new belt?

Rotate the engine one more time and the camshaft will be exactly on time.

It goes like this:

The crankshaft rotates one revolution while the camshaft rotates half a revolution and the balance shafts rotate two revolutions.

I've already removed all the pulleys. Any ideas?

Put the crankshaft in such a position that none of the pistons are near the top. Reinstall the camshaft pulley (with the key, etc.) and rotate the camshaft to the proper position.

Then rotate (by hand, of course) the camshaft to TDC on #1. If you sense any obstruction, rotate the crank in the opposite direction until you get TDC.

The rest of the installation is left as an exercise...

Or finish up what you're doing now, install the timing belt, tension with the twist method and rotate engine to TDC on the cam and check your timing on the crank. Your post did say the flywheel lock was on, no? If so, the postions of the cam and crank realative to each other won't change as long as you didn't move anything. Leave off the balance belt until after you've done the above.

As George says, then on with the exercise.

Piece of cake George and Simon. The flywheel lock IS on and I marked the position of the camshaft sproket at 180 degrees out so I'll finish with the oil seals and water pump then use your method Simon.

Thanks again guys!

... and it will be a lot easier if you pull those plugs before you rotate........ and using a long screwdriver on #1 makes it pretty straight forward when you set TDC.

The lady still holds good compression and I’m going to replace the plugs anyway so plugs out and screw it Alex. Any way of knowing if #1 is exhaust or intake stroke?

Put the rotor on the end of the camshaft and if the rotor is pointing to the number one plug wire, it's on the compression stroke because it's getting ready to fire that plug wire.

Speaking of making things seem easy....they put on quite a show last night. Congrats. I was hoping the SEC would make a good showing. I don't know if Ohio State was having a bad game or Florida is just that good, but I guess it doesn't matter....they completely dominated.

Yea, I guess your right Edik, or would it have something to do with the diameter of the crankshaft sproket?
