Check it over very carefully for vacuum leaks. The second thing I would look at would be weak fuel pressure but it's more likely to be a vacuum leak in one of the lines.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Thanks for yor replies,
Ive changed the cambelt and tensoiner and my timing is spot on. I changed the fuel filter last year but have done less than 100miles since.
To me, it feels like the engine floods then picks up. How is the air fuel mixture regulated when cold? I do know its running slightly rich but did pass the U.K. emissions test which has 4.500 co limit!

All vacuum lines should be checked. Also check out 924.org as they have a lot of the answers for 924. I'm not sure how the air/fuel is regulated on your car but after rereading your first post, that sounds more like the problem. Should have figured that out from it starting right away. Lean condition would make it hard to start.

Too rich - you could advance timing. These cars like lots of advance. 10BTDC is a good start. Problem may be as simple as that. But as Hugh said, go to the 924 board and ask there. HTH
