Cruise Control Drive Link Noise
On my way into town this morning I started getting a clacking noise from the drivers side engine compartment. It was intermittent and seemed to be related to clutching. Clutch engaged no noise, disengaged noise. I got to a parking lot and while the noise was happening got under the hood. Definitely the cruise control drive link 944-617-121-00-OEM. Now on my '88 924S the control unit (computer box) is either missing or wasn't an option bought so that drive link has no function as far as I can tell. There is a wire cable attached to the drive link that goes through the firewall and there's also a multi-pin cable on the drive link. In fact to stop the noise I disconnected the multi-pin cable, test drove the car and didn't think this would have any adverse effects. Is that the case? Will operating the car without these circuits complete harm the DME or any other electrical components?

If you dont have the cruise control computer (driver side, inside the car, above where the rear hatch button is, rectangle silver box), then the servo can't turn on. The servo is on the passanger side in the engine compartment right in front of the battery. This is for the 944, not sure if the 924 is different or not.
I dont see how you can have the servo, cable & even the lever on the steering column without the computer...at least from the factory that is. Disconnecting the servo though, will just cause it to not have power, so you should be fine.

That's what I thought. The clacking was disturbing though. I guess if it really went nuts it could grab that throttle cable and give me a real scare.

I'm not positive that's your problem though.
if there is no computer, then the servo wont know what to do. Without one the other does nothing. I'm thinking it's something else. Have you ever replaced the clutch or is it original?

Definitely that drive link unit. I put my ear right next to it isolate the location of the noise and I could feel something knocking inside of it. This car has a brand new 944 clutch installed by a really good sports car mechanic. Question is now if I want to simply remove the offending drive link and cable. I do plan on showing this car with the hood up.

The servos are known to go bad.
if it was getting power and "instructions, then you have to have the computer. no way around that. you sure you dont have it?

Unless it's hidden somewhere under the carpet - no I haven't found it. I know the location from the photos I've seen here but there's nothing like that in my car.

it's right against the body of the car, directly above the hatch switch.
But then again, it could be somewhere else in a 924, but I doubt it.
