Isn't this a R134a fitting?
Well, the heat-wave hit here in CT today, and I'm now scrambling to get my AC blowing cold. I checked out the fitting just forward of the canister behind the driver side headlight, and it looked surprisingly like the quick-connect style fitting of an R134a system, though it had what looked like a normal schrader valve pin inside it. Also, the cap had an L on it... I thought the low side port was on the compressor, no?

Yep that should be the High side, the low side is on the comp.
Somebody might install it in there to charge the system. Because they don,t know where the other port is. Charging the system without the Charging Machine it is easer from the low side port. You can actually suck as much as possible from the can by running the A/C compressor. Good Luck Bud |

You need to change that out for the right high side fitting. As aforementioned by bud9344, that is the high side, and you will fuch some stuff up if you try to charge there, you might lose a hand.
On top of that, it's leaking freon and oil right there, so the fitting has to go regardless. It would be different if you had the right fitting and could change out the schrader valve. What you are getting into is a pain in the wazoo, but if you search for a recent a/c post on the early cars, I'll bet you find the best answer. ![]() Edit: saw the hole in the top of the cap for the fitting, look for oily, black residue on all the components.
