cooling fan problem ...resolved

Still havent sorted out the issue with my 83 944 na , parked it instead. ...Now Im tring to get it fixed so I can get on the road without overheating. The car runs great, when engine comes up to temp & fan comes on it will melt a fuse every time. Previous suggestions all said fan motor going bad. I pulled the fans & they both spin freely by hand & operate smooth when hooked up to 12v directly. So what could be causing the fuse to pop every time? Anyone know what kind of resistance reading I should be getting from the fans while I have them pulled & at what volts I should be bench testing them at. ....Im also thinking I have a short somewhere or something grounded out, but all wires I can see so far look good & clean with no tampering. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do the fans come on when the a/c is turned on? Does it pop fuse 6 when the a/c is turned on? Does fuse 3 pop? If fuse 3 pops, chances are that the resistor is bad. If fuse 5 is blowing, it could be the relay acting funny.

Fuse #3 is the one melting. #6 does not melt. Both fans spin free by hand. With key forward & AC on only the drivers side spins....I flipped fans upside down to reverse fans & same result, drivers side spins with AC on. Passenger side never turns but I know for sure both fans are ok now. .....Does the car need to be actually running & Hot before both fans will turn on with AC on? .....So when car warms up & passenger side fan kicks on is when the fuse melts.

Check the fan wiring. The small harnesses have a tendency to get "involved" with belts if they aren't strapped down properly.

I checked those harnesses out real good. Nothing damaged. ....Ive searched all over Clarks & Pelican & come up with no help to my problem. Most info is for later cars. I would like to swap out whatever resistors I can from a parts car I have but dont know where to find them. ....I also see that the #3 fuse works the power antenna, well the antenna has not worked in my 5 years of owning the car so not sure if that matters since it hasnt been an issue in the past.

Well I decided to pull the relay & that wasnt easy, it was practially siezed in place. I had to pull the fuse box down to get it out. After I pulled it out I seen it was the original made in 04/83 ...Inside the relay is a definate burnt spot. I swapped it with a relay from a parts car & now I have some results. ...With key forward & AC on the drivers side spins on low speed & passenger on high. I havent put everything back together because I noticed my lower radiator hose has a VERY thin spot caused by the pass fan rubbing on it over time. Wanted to replace that 1st & so its off to buy one today & then the real test...to see what happens when the fan kicks on after warming up. Im keeping my fingers crossed its that simple. ....Anyways, does anyone know what is an acceptable level of resistance for the fans? They test good but do have different degrees of resistance.

FIXED.... simple as a burnt original relay. Fans now work properly & all is normal under running conditions. ...I decided to replace my lower hose while at it since the passenger side cooling fan had rubbed it very thin in 1 spot. I noticed the new hose I bought was a bit shorter than the original which made a better fit & took the hose away from the fan just enough. .......Thanks to all that have helped.
