85.5 ignition switch wiring. PLEASE HELP

Hey evryone, just got a 944, and needed help or advice. I am trying to diagnose a no start. I think I figured it out to be x relay, but before I figured it out, i disconnected the plug behind idnition swith to see why I had no guages. Needless to say when i took off the cover holding the wires, most poped out. Does anyone know which position they go in, or have a pic. I'm sure the car will run, but cant figure out which position the wires go in. Stuck in PA

I do plenty of electrical work onboard ships and these factory electrical diagrams still confuse the hell outta me. So im not sure if im reading this right. Here are the pin / wire assignments for the molex connector.

Pin 30 - Red
Pin P - Green
Pin X - Black/Yellow
Pin 15 - Black
Pin 50 - Red/Black
Pin R - Red/Black

Hey everyone. Just a quick question, I'm back in PA and I'm trying to get the wires correct. I am looking at the connecter and there are more than one pin 30, and sometimes like pin x is in between two pins. Can anyone disconnect the ignition switch and just take a pic of which holes in the connecter are used. Dont open connecter up or the wires will go flying. Much appreciated

I think I can help you, since I spent a whole year and a half rewiring a 1987 944n/a.

But, I will need to get a little more information from you.

First, what year is your car?
Second, I will not take my ignition switch out for a picture since it is a PITA to get underthere.
However, I do have an extra ignition switch from the 1987 944, which I can take a picture of as it is.
Next, if you have a 1985 944 take a look at the door VIN and tell me what date the car came from Germany. That makes a big difference in the wiring diagrams.

I have all the factory wiring diagrams for the 944 years, so I should be able to tell what you have and where the wires go.

I will wait to hear from you.

I did the exact same thing trying to unplug my switch and I was able to tell which spots had actual wires connected by the discoloration and/or dirt in the areas where they go. I think I had the switch out of the car by then and could tell which pins on the switch had been used and which had been exposed to the elements. I think the shiny ones were where the connectors had been. Hope this helps...

I cannot tell you were they go, but maybe this will help. you can connect them up and check for continuity before applying battery voltage.

Pin 30 4.0 red wire
pin P 1.0 grey wire
pin X 2.5 black/yellow stripe
pin 15 2.5 black wire
pin 50 4.0 red/black stripe
pin R 1.0 red/black stripe

switch positions off, R (accessory), 1 (run), 2 (start)

pin 30 is battery voltage, hot all the time
pin 15 is switched battery voltage, hot only in positions 1 & 2
pin P is hot in positions off and R
pin X is hot in positions R and 1
pin 50 is hot in position 2, starter solenoid
pin R is hot in all positions except off

Numbers like 4.0, 2.5 are metric wire gauge in square mm's.

checking continuity is nearly impossibe without the switch being taken off stearing column, anthough very good info. If you look at molex connector some numbers or letters are reused, so tough to tell exactly which position they go in. Anyone want to take 5 minutes and quickly unplug, take pic of which position wires are used would be greatly appreciated

1. If the connectors have the exact same marking (pin 30 or pin x for example) maybe it doesn't matter which one you plug into?

2. It only is two small screws to remove the electrical part of the switch. although they are hard to get to.

I didnt realize there were two small screws. Mine just pulled off. And I think that is does matter where the wires go. If anyone is parting an 85.5 944 i'll just buy the plug and some length of wire. That seems to be the only way I will get the answer I need

my1st911, i would have done as you asked on my car but having changed that ignition switch on the car once before, it is an absolute nightmare to get those two screws out.

I THINK i have a complete switch and plug at work but i need to check. I should be down there tomorrow to check for you.
