How to tell a real S
I purchased an 87na and was told it was an S model. How do I verify that?

Well... for starters it should have a sixteen valve engine in it.

16v Motor and the 944S badge on the rear end are dead giveaways....

Cam cover will be double width (because it covers two cams instead of one).
It will look like this:

944s
Just as I suspected, it is not an s after all. It has the s badge, but not the 16 valve engine.

Gee, I guess that it's easier to stick on an S badge than it is to put in a 16V motor.
Kind of like the VW GTI wannabes, or the boss I used to have that put IROC-Z stickers on his camaro... we used to call it the pseudo-IROC.

I saw the same thing one time at 944Fest. The guy seriously thought it was an S but it had an old 8 valve motor in it.
Either a real S with a replacement 8 valve motor Stock 944 with a S badge on the back.

This is the S engine.. the airbox is in the front and it says "16ventiler" on it. it should also have a badge on the fender that says "16ventiler". Aside from that the S has bigger brakes, a different transmission and maybe airbags and ABS
![]() ![]() Some people think the '88 and '89 944's are S's because their 8v engine is bigger and 20hp more powerful, but the S is a significant 40hp more than normal.. and mine is about 15hp shy of the turbo. Last edited by Endat; 02-13-2010 at 07:38 PM.. |

The 2.5 S has the same brakes as the 8-valve. The 3.0 S2 has the same brakes as the 951 (minus the front cooling scoops).

Redline on the dash is higher than the normal 6400 RPM for the 8 valve. IIRC it is around 6800 RPM

You are speaking of a 944 correct? If it was an 87 924, it would definately be an "S"

Eric is correct. An '87 924S would have an 8v engine identical to a 944. What did you buy? A 944S should have a 16v engine. I have read concerns about expensive repairs due to the cam/chain/head design, it is possible that it is an S, but to save money after an expensive failure, a PO swapped in an 8v engine. It is possible a PO installed an S badge on a 944. Both those scenarios are bad form if you are selling the car as a 944S. If it is a 924S, things are probably correct.

A 924S is the old Narrow body and says 924..... Its hard to mistake them for a 944S.... I'm betting we have a 944na badged as a 944S.... or maybe not even badged... Just a lying seller...

iirc, both th e 944S2 and 968 have scoops, they're just shaped differently. I could be confusing the 968CS into the mix also. partno's on PET should tell the story. i.e. that the 944S2 and 968 scoops are the same and the 968CS is a better design...
