It's funny someone said they don't like the look of the 944 from the back. My dad (who is in love with my car to the point where he washes it for me when I'm not looking) will actually go out and park my car with the front forward if I park it the other way. He says the front is great - but that it looks like a Datsun from the back.

Oh dad - you so silly!!

Not that I'm biased, but I prefer this look:

Zoltan, I totally agree with you--a European license plate between the taillights on a 944 looks so much better The opening was obviously designed for the wider euro design--the US license plate is framed totally wrong and leaves way too much space on the sides while sticking out on the bottom. On top of that, the rear bumper has a blank space between the two rubber bumpers, so why not put something there?

As far as the rear deflector debate goes, I think it looks much better on a red car than it does on any other. My 944 actually came with it as a factory option:

Thumbs up

I vote for the reflector. It adds to the car's sportiness.

Yep: looks good on a red car:

Note: this picture is before I replaced the lic. plate frame: my new one has the plate more securely fastened to the frame.

I didn't know that it was a factory (or dealer) option. I thought all of these lenses were aftermarket.

Shaun: who's white 944 is that next to yours?

The PO of my car had one of those 'PORSCHE' lenses installed. It was cheaper for me to get a new lighted plate holder, than put the plate back to its correct position. Actually, the center lens is growing on me, especially after I noticed that the original spot isn't the best either.

Back to the subject: kinda funny to see our tailights on the other cars!

Hmmm. I went out and looked at the 944 and the license plate was perfectly centered.

I think the plate between the bumper makes the 944 look like it has a big ass.

Personally, I'm not into the big ass thing...

i think that large space between the lights makes the rear look pretty buff. but when you add in the reflector (which just like Zoltan, i thought it was solely aftermarket) it really brings out the way the rear slopes and how ugly it is. Yes, those rears are UGLY. Add in the reflector, and you might as well go hide in a little hole. But anyways, thats my opinion on the matter. My taste is my taste.

Just wondering, but does anyone know the exact number of 944s produced with the reflector as a factory option? Just a thought

I also think the rear end looks more tough without the reflector. I don't like the way the reflector says 'PORSCHE' in huge letters, it looks kind of tacky IMO, especially when 'prosche' is already written in those thin lines right below. I will make an exception for the reflector on SHAUN's car. I think his car looks really good with the painted reflector in the back.

i just cant understand how some of you dont like the look of those reflectors ( but i respect your differences in taste). after all, its similar to the look of all the 911's

Ribs,
there is a solution to fix the placement of the rear plate. Look at the site below and you'll see how to center it up vertically, basically just flipping the bracket upside down and trimming it a bit

951 Racer X site

Click the link on the left of the site "License Plate Mod", I am gonna do this eventually.

Reflectors look BAD !!!!

Interesting, my license plate has always been perfectly centered since it was brand new. I've always noticed how many other 944 license plates sag and are slightly tilted.

Is it possible that early cars had the plated centered and later cars tilted?

The plate is tilted to avoid shadows from the license plate lights that are perpendicular to the ground. The angle of the plate results in much better illumination throughout the plate face.

If it wouldn't be for that ridge or lip on the bottom of the panel, I think it would look better. If they were trying to tilt the plate up, they could have put rubber wedges underneath the plate and achieve the same effect.

Just my $0.42.
-Z.

Side note: Unfortunately in NJ, we have to have plates in the front of the car too, which totally ruins the lines of my S2!! Boo!
