Strange odometer issue

I am looking at a 1986 944 located about 7 hours away from me that I am considering going to look at. He mentioned that the car has around 100K miles but that the odometer jumped to 350K miles at some point and does not work. Sounds fishy, ever hear of this?

Yea, I kind thought that would be engineered out. I think that might have been what the person he bought it from told him. That is a bunch of miles.

But...
When I have had my speedometer cases apart (4), I would say it could be very easy to "adjust" the mileage while repairing the broken or slipped gears.

Someone may just have been very careless doing the fix.

krystar is correct it will not just jump ahead.

This is the "tech Info Center" ^^^ link on guages.

Thanks for the link. I think I am going to keeping looking since I just started to look and it is pretty far away. I have plenty to do on my 633csi.

We might want to check into this jumping speedo conundrum. I have heard in the past of the speedo when it first turned to 100K it jumped to 300K instead. It's seems very rare but I think it does happen...There again this is hearsay from two different persons unknown from each other, and one many years ago while the second was within the last year.

This is the third rumor I have heard of this particular happening...

Hummm ????

I tend to believe the story as 350K is quite a lot of miles. I would go check it out if it were closer to me.

There was a poster here, I think, who's mileage went up 1 mile for every .1 miles driven.

Seems feasible; if the car is truly a good bargain, and it looks/runs great, you might want to take a gander and have it looked at.

I also have heard of rare cases where the 100,00 marker die weird things like described...

My odometer has been jumping at odd intervals. Luckily it hasn't rolled 100's of thousands but it has been pretty random. Sometimes it rolls 100 miles in one or two miles. Haven't taken it apart since the clutch broke. I expect there's a stray piece of broken plastic tooth caught in something.

Thanks for all the responses, sounds like maybe it is possible.

He is asking 4K firm. Guards red with tan interior, sunroof and 5 speed. He has recently done 3K of head work and timing belt (but not the water pump). Has a tear on drivers seat and a couple small dents and scars. He does not seem particularly motivated to sell so I think I have time to consider. Still waiting for pics.
