Rear Sway Bar
Will a rear sway bar from a 85/2 fit a 84?

It was not an installed option on this car, so I am planning getting the bar, drop links, bushings, eccentric bolts, hardware and mounting brackets. Am I missing anything? I am planning on starting with the 14mm bar, and up size if needed later down the road. Seems like the 14mm are a bit cheaper and easier to find. I figure it will be a huge improvement over the stock condition of no sway bar.

The mounting did not come on your car stock - the mounts are welded to the car. Someone makes bolt-on mounting for non-bar cars though, can't remember who.
I've got a very nice 14mm bar with bushings, clamps, drop links - everything except the mounting adapters for your car. LMK if you're interested. Quote:

I can get you the OEM weld-on brackets if you need them. They're not too bad, and not very hard to weld on for somebody who knows how. I can also provide some direction on where the welds should go if you need it. I think I might have spare bar and some hardware floating around too.
The other alternative is to get 3.5" U-bolts. This approach will be cheaper than the other aftermarket kit referenced above, but both of those approaches will not allow you to get the same factory angle on the bar, so if you go this route, you might want to get the $69 adjustable drop links from Paragon rather than using the stock drop links so you can set the preload the way you want.

ideola,
I'm in the process of adding a rear sway to my early car right now. It didn't come from the factory with a sway on the rear. What are the brackets you are talking about. I'm buying the strap for the rear (pn:113-411-333-M100), with the drop links (pn:477-511-051A-OEM), the eccentric bolts (pn:477-511-515-OEM), lower shackle hex bolts (pn:N-010-452-4-OEM), along with all new bushing for the front and rear. I'm using 25.5mm front and 18mm rear bars (I will be buying new straps for the front because the early straps are too small in the front). What am I missing? When I've looked under it there is a place for me to put the straps in the rear already there. Is that what your talking about? Thanks. |

My '86 NA didn't come with a bar originally but it did have the mounting brackets already. I don't know if it's an early vs late 944 thing.

My 86 924S had no rear bar factory installed, but the mounting brackets were already welded to the torsion bar tube

On the early cars, these were not standard equipment. At some point, they might have included them on all 924S/944 torsion carriers, but the early 2.0L cars only had them if the sway bar was present due to an option package.

my 83 944 had the mounts for the rear sway bar, but did not come with one. My 84 did have the optional bars I used used the 84 bits on the 83 to bolt up the rear bar. I would guess most if not all 944 or 924S had the mounts for the rear sway bar even if it was an option.

Well it looks like I have them on my car already then. PS: where do I mount the eccentric bolts? Last edited by Laptop_geek; 08-09-2010 at 01:59 PM.. |

Indeed you do!
See that big mother rusty nut in the middle of the spring plate? Remove it and put the eccentric in it's place.
