924 engine questions
I'm told that the early 924's used an audi engine
any one know what engine its based on? I was planning on building a engine for my Jetta, and depending on what block its based on I might be able to swap a 924 engine in instead. |

The 924 used a modified engine from the Audi 100LS, it was also used in the VW LT truck in Europe. There is no way you could or would want to use a 924 engine in a VW as there are far too many other better VW engines to use.

Dont consider the 924 engine
I agree with Britwrench. The 924 motor is known for reliability but there are many VW engines that are reliable. The 924 is only 100 HP and any more power from this engine is expensive. The only reason anyone ever put a Porsche in a VW was for more power. You wont get that from this engine. It would also be a PITA to fit a different engine and the 924 motor wouldn't be worth it.
What are you looking for in the new engine? Power, ease of replacement, reliability. I am not familiar with the Jetta but there are better choices for any of these VW needs.

power and reliability
I was planning to do a 16v swap, but was thinking a 924 swap might be a decent upgrade, but I guess I'll go back to the 16v idea |

My 2 cents!!!!
8 Valve Turbo!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot stress that enough. 1. Better low Torque for the street than 16V. 16V has more top end power 2. Cheaper to build. 3. Turbo Manifold $275 16V $400 4. IHI Turbo from 87 Ford T-bird Water cooled Oil lubed $100 5. ARP head studs $110 6. TF4 for Fuel And Ignition $379 7. 83 to 90 GTI or Cabrio block 8.5 to 1 compression NO Oil squirters $cheap 8. G60 Cam or G60 head $cheap 9. G60 block built in oil squirters $cheap 10. G60 drops in 11. additional injectors mounted between TB and Intake 2 42lbs/hr $20 12. Aluminum TB adapter $according to who you know. We will build you one for $100 13. Oil lines and Pan $150 Or weld up your pan and $70 14. Intercooler $50 From what fits your application best. 15 IC piping $50 16. Quife to harness the power $850 Optional DON'T use the 10 to 1 block and hydro head of 85 and later GTI's. DO use their tranny 020 9A best tranny for a VW turbo. Update the rivets on the ring gear to bolts, or be sorry. Running a G60 block and P&P head with ARP head studs and 15 psi boost is well over stock 951 levels in a lighter car. We have built several of these and they embarass the hell out of Mustangs and the like. Always race from the right lane!!! ![]() WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! torque steer Weeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!! Kevin PCM www.perfectchoicemotorsports.com |
