Can we run 110 or kerosene?

I went to an Olympic gas station today because some motorcycle guys told me the place sells racing gas.

So I stopped by and found they have 110 leaded gasoline and a pump for kerosene. Obviously we can't run leaded fuel in our engines, but what about kerosene? What happens when leaded fuel is used in our engines anyway, does it ruin the catalyst or does it have other effects? -Trevor

lead neutralizes the platinum in the cat, rendering it ineffective permanently.

kerosene is jet fuel! don't know about kerosene as a car fuel, i suspect it may not be volatile enough, like pure toluene. but i'm not a chemist, i bet some here may know.

aviation gas is stinky...very very very stinky...and if its illegal to run your car on it like it is over here you dont want to be going anywhere near a cop.....i wouldn't like to get fined and are more likely to get impounded straight away..

any trace can also been seen because of the colouration use for av gas...this was a method they used during the second world war to stop thieving of millitary supplies.....this gas also costs more and you are probably likely to see the same results from using an octane booster in your car......Leadfoot

Kerosene will not work in a gas engine. Like the previous post said, it does not evaporate fast enough. Don't put it in the tank.

You could use kerosene in your car if you have a diesel, but I haven't seen one of those in a porsche yet

BTW the thing about jet fuel being coloured isn't true. Kerosene is just as white as normal car fuel, it only stinks a bit more.

Many of those little bottles of fuel injection cleaner at the parts stores contain kerosene.

Kerosene isn't colored, but most aviation fuel is. 87Leaded is red, 100LL is blue, Jet-A is yellow. It's more so that you can be certain the right kind of fuel is being put in your airplane (most FBOs have 3 or 4 fuel pump right next to each other, with diff grades of fuel, easy to ake a mistake).

During the preflight you're supposed to make sure that the fuel is the right color (my instructor got me on this once).

Actually, my girlfriend's dad is the manager of the chemical plant in West Virginia that is one of the only 2 makers of petroleum dyes in the US. No one really uses em for much (there are dyes in some automotive fluids, he makes the dye that makes Dextron red).

colouration is a safety precusion used by sensible people who dont want to take the risk of their planes falling out of the sky or ruining their beloved porsche engines............

our unleaded is a different colour to leaded and they also have different shaped nozles at the pump to prevent u from sticking super in unleaded cars. Diesel and unleaded are the same size nozle and i have seen one moron put diesel in his unleaded van and have to get it towed................. DOh!

colouration was used during the war to stop black market trade of military stock... if it was used over here in our god farsaken remote location of Australia it suprises me it wasnt used elsewhere....Leadfoot

benzine which can also be contained in those little bottles is carcenagenic (cancer causing) so i have also been informed of.....

Since when is Jet-A yellow?? I have been an aircraft engineer for a year now and have seen lots of Jet-A, but I have never seen any that is yellow. Or does this make difference between the manufacturers?

110 leaded shouldn't hurt anything if your not running a cat and on a track. However it won't do anything for you unless your trying to run some cazy boost/timing combo. Most people here know I'm sure that octane is nothing but resistance to detonation. Sometimes motors that don't need it will actually run worse because of it's resistance.
I don't know about commercial but I fuel military jets everyday and it's clear. The kerosene I use as home is clear. Some gov subsidised (sp?) diesl is red because it's only supposed to be used in farm equipment on the farm.
Kerosene in your engine would be bad unless the engine is out of the car and your cleaning it for a rebuild

To be honest, I've never seen any jet-A (all my flying is in light singles that burn the blue juice). My private pilot's FAA textbook has a picture of it and claims that it is yellow-colored.

Maybe they just mean gasoline-colored?
