Which glue for rear view mirror

I accidentally bumped my head against the rear view mirror doing some installation work, and the entire thing fell off. There is a circular trace of glue on the windscreen, and the corresponding surface on the mirror holder is metal. I assume it is all original.

What type of glue should I use to glue this, and are there any special tricks? (Could not find an answer to this when searching through this list, other than that someone saying DIY glueing only lasts for one year?)

This is for a 968, but it seems all models use the same mirror.

Permatex makes a special mirror mounting adhesive, and it needs the special primer with it.

Hi egil, Go to any local auto parts shop and tell them what you need. Oslo is a beautiful city, at least I thought so when I was there many, many moons ago. Make sure you scrape off the old glue on the glass side of the mirror mount.

You don't need it. Mine fell off a while ago and the bracket that is supposed to hold the mirror disappeared, so I never got around to putting it back up. I wouldn't be surprised if the mirror itself was glued right to the glass though from the PO.

What is good to get the leftover adhesive off the glass?

Carefully scrape it off with a new razor blade...

before you scrape off the old glue take a crayon and mark the glue location on the outside of the windshield so you will get the mirror back in the same spot. Amazing how hard it is to get back right without doing this.

Thanks, Larry, but I sometimes feel Oslo is located in a developing country when it comes to automotive things. Things are expensive and hard to find. As an example, Alfa Romeo parts through the dealer are 3 times the going rate in rest of Europe (so they get none of my business, needless to say). Dealer Porsche parts prices here are the same as in Germany, however, so I get much of my stuff through them.

BTW, the guy at the Porsche dealer recommended tape, which I think is not good advice.

So no luck in locating Permatex glue, and even Loctite (guys I trust) was hard to find. So I had to resort to something called Granville (made in UK?). There was no accelerator. The package said the glue would harden in a minute, but I think it must have taken much more than an hour (I held the metal plate in place with tape while it was setting). Anyway, the next day it did seem like the glue had hardened, and it has held the mirror in place so far.
