Don't recommend that speed in an early car, the drivers side windshield trim blew off.
It was pretty stable, if a bit twitchy) at that speed.

To be honest it depends.
If we are talking road or race car and on what circuit. " laughs " air craft >_< too. On a motorcycle not much over 145-155 I'm factoring speedo error. In a road car north of 180mph, but I personally felt there was speedo error. Race machines 190+ normally. It's also about how fast you get there combined with the duration you operate the vehicle at and the given vehicle. Winds, Surface, Temp etc doing a 145-165 thru a bend and back up to 180 is way different. 911's are probably the more out of the box fast. Ferrari's too. Some of the Japanese machines " the era " were quick. And achieved maximum operation speed. One of the coolest cars at 155mph is the 99' Mcoupe. Air Craft is not bad. It's different being the pilot vs passengers prop vs jet is different. Mostly how G's are placed upon the body vs sheer speed and getting used to rappid elevation changes. |

yup
speedos are usually off, and generally read high - the average 968 for example reads 150 when you are only doing 139 - it's pretty close under 100 though GPS is usually off at high speed too - the delay time to the satellite almost always causes high readings at the upper end - it's because of the calculation that is done, and the refresh rate - i've "fooled" my GPS into reading 10mph high at about 120 - it isn't too hard - i didn't feel it was safe to play around beyond that - too many thing moving too fast to keep fiddling radar is about the only way to measure speed, unless you can sustain it for a while, which is why the bonneville runs are conducted the way they are - i use a radar gun for my local stuff, and at the track kids, don't try this at home - high speed runs are DANGEROUS - tires are extremely critical at high speeds |

141 mph (indicated), in an Alfa Romeo 164S, for about a 3 mile stretch of RT 29N in Charlottesville Va. I was late for work.
Have run around 200 KPH for about an hour or so on the A4, between Verona and Milan. I was late for a plane.

About 190kph on a freeway here in outer Sydney, in my other car, for a very short space of time. Ran out of patience with a young man in a V8 who was giving me grief.
Also provided an excuse to see if the Japanese-car-companies'-convention speed-limiter actually worked. (Supposed to kick in at 180.) Answer: sort of. No opportunity to drive safely very fast in the 944 so far. And I like my license.

none of that would affect the gearing. just saying. perhaps what i wrote wasn't clear.... my car is redlining at about 125-130 in fourth gear. i still have all of fifth gear. 1BAR of boost, half the interior removed, chipped, etc., here.
