944 S2 Normal Running Temperature
Just curious, normal for temp indicator to be between 8 & 9 o'clock position? Should it even move from 8:00?
Also, what's your 20W-50 Dino oil brand recomendation? |

jep32,
I just looked at your car and it is nice! 46K! per Clarks Sensors and Gauges - Information, Troubleshooting, and Testing Oil? I use Castrol GTX 20-50 This is a highly "hotly" debated topic. Bored? Review pages 1-82 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/367300-ultimate-motor-oil-thread-why-we-hate-cj4-sm-oils.html If you got service records with the car, that would be a good choice. GL John

Should I be concerned it does get to 9:00 occasionally? Straight regular antifreeze, or is there some coolant unique to Porsche?

I would suggest a phosphate-free coolant, such as Zerex G5.

No, probably normal temp at times.
On my '88 when I drive up north it will climb to half or a little more. Once I reach the plateau at Sunset Point, it will drop to less than half and below. You might just get some Simple Green and spray it diluted on the front of the compressor and if possible the front of the radiator. Then take a hose and flush from the fan/engine side to the front bumper. This will clean the fins and not shove the fly wings deeper into the condensor and radiator. All antifreeze us usually phosphate free. Change it every 2 or 3 years--mileage not considered. Water Wetter can drop your temps--maybe 5 degrees. Won't hurt. What you have to watch for ---when it happens, and it usually will, is a brown oil film in the reservoir called "milkshake". The oil cooler seals are bad and have to be changed. Just watch oil and coolant levels regularly and you should be OK. GL John

93-968 same 3.0 L as yours after a hard run idling at 1,100 RMP at this point the fans are one & temp will go down to the quarter mark in approx a minutes or so, it's normal that your temp goes up to 3/4 mark depending on driving condition.Oil is Dino Castol GTX 20W50 same as John.Hope this thread doesn't turn into another oil war.BTW it is recommended to let your car idle a couple of minutes at 12/11 RPM after a hard run before shutting it off,I always thougth that this only apply to a turbo car. But I don't argue with my owner manual.

Woo-Hoo!!! A new oil thread!! ![]() j/k Valvoline VR1 conventional 20w-50 for its high zinc and very high flashpoint for dino formula... Though just a 2.5L 8v with a 10-year genuine Porsche radiator, my hot temp is 9oclock till the fans kick in... then down to 7:45... all this in 100F stop and go.

My S2 would usually stay around the second white mark but sometimes it would reach the third mark for just a little while. Most of my driving was between 90-100 F ambient temp with the AC on. Never once has it been over the third mark during my ownership.

Sounds like my car is quite normal. Temps in northeast have been quite hot this summer 90-100. The temp "creeps" towards the mid point in traffic until the fans kick in...otherwise locked in on 1st bar while moving. Sounds normal based on your feedback, Thanks all

BTW when I bougth the car it had 78,651 klms on it & the deal was that all major maintenance will be paid by the PO ,so no expenses was spare it included all belts rollers ect plus a brand new water pump/stat/ thermo switch & a rad flush with new coolant,(hoses were ok) presently it has 82,123 klms on it, if you add it up it's only 3,472 klms. So lol it better run cool

I have 47 k now, all major maintenance less water pump done at 44 k, hence the concern. I've heard when the h2o pump goes though, it's sudden?

Checked coolant cold, and it's just above the min mark. Will I need to bleed the sys after topping off to max line with prestone 50/50?
I can't find the bleeder bolt...anyone have a pic of where it is? Last edited by jep32; 08-17-2011 at 08:08 PM.. |

Hmmm...
I know the factory spec is to change TB no later than every 45k and WP every other TB change.. ie: 90k I found in my service records the orig factory WP lasted 122k... until year 2000. The second lasted 103k... until 2010 when it was still pumping. I purchased it 4 months ago. Has Zerex G-05 Phosphate Free Item #28 ?? 931 106 156 00 Screw plug on: Porsche 944 Cylinder Head Parts
