Porsche Crest 1984 944 2.5L NA DME question

I want to replace my DME with one that I can chip using FRWilk. I will keep my stock on the side.

Should I buy an early DME, a BMW 027 ECU, splice them together and install the powerprom chip?

Or should I look for a 1984-1985 DME with the single EPROM that can be replaced with powerprom?

Would a 1985.5+ DME work for this in my 1984 944? What would it require to work?

Please give me some information or point me in the right direction. I've read through the FRWilk site but couldn't make up my mind. Thank you.

Go for the 85 on ecu with the replaceable chip socket, you need to specify your engine type as he will need to know before you buy the chip as there are compression ratio changes over the early models as well as other factors.
I have decided to buy his chip for my car soon as his facts and specs are realistic for this motor ,don't expect huge gains cause they aren't there.
Check out 944MAX chips also if you want to shop around, cheers

Thank you for your response. Much appreciated. Know anyone selling an early 85 ecu with the single chip?

I could be wrong but I believe you need an 85.5 DME and an 85.5 AFM for this conversion to work correctly. An early 85 DME is still a Series 1 DME. What you need is the later car setup (85.5+).

Correct ,
I didn't mention it in the post as the question refered to ECU's,100% on the AFM the car won't run without this change.

So any late model (85.5+) AFM and DME would work, as long as they are both for a NA setup? Does it matter if the AFM comes from a 951 or a 944S?
