1984 old water pump
My car has the old type water pump on it (which i will replace)
Shall i replace it with the upgraded type with the belt guard? If so, at the moment the car has a 32mm timing belt roller, if i up grade the water pump do i up grade the timing belt kit from a 32mm belt roller to a 46.2mm belt roller. Or do i stay with the 32mm timing kit. Any thoughts would be helpfull and any think else i should be buying along with these kits to ensure the jobs done right and only once. Lastly the bottom two tensioners on the lower left hand side of the engine near the power steering pump have a bit of oil around them, are there oil seals behind these tensioners or as it look the little bit of oil may have come from the power steering hose and leaked into the timing cover housing. |

Up-grade to the later Water Pump with the Belt Guard and the 46.2mm roller - The early pumps and the smaller rollers are no longer used.
There are no seals associated with the belts and rollers - the oil had to come from some place else.

Here is a link to replace the OEM water pump to the new updated pump.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/603920-qriginal-updated-water-pumps-timing-belts-whats-difference.html The oil on the tensioners------------------------IF you want to do it once and for all--------you have to do the FOES Front Of Engine Seals. There is a kit available on Pelican, You also have to replace the front crank seal and "O" ring. Usually the oil pump sleeve has to be replaced as well if it shows a groove from the seal. If not replaced, it will eat the new seal. Here is a link explaining all the DIYs you need: Projects & DIY Links Do you know how to tension the cam belt? Do you have any experience? If you do not do it correct, you will bend valves in the head. GL John

Thanks for the help.
I havent tensioned a 944 belt before but have been reading up about the 90 Degree method. Yes i have had a heaps of experience bending valves on and old alfa sud i had once. First one was leaving a rag on the radiator which dropped down and broke the two timing belts, bent valves Second put the head gasket on upside down blocking a oil passage gallery to the cam, coursing the cam to stop rotating and breaking another belt and bending more valves. Thirdly, reused a timing belt, but put it on in the opposite way it came off, causing it to strip the teeth off the belt and bending more valves. That was all on the same car, a porsche should be a piece of cake. |

After you finish your cam adjustment with the 90 degree method,
Double check your tension:
