Headlight Problem

I think my ignition switch is going out, but before I replace it thought someone may have had the same issue, so here is my problem. I turn the lights on with the ignition switch in position 1 and the headlights come up and are on. When I start the car the headlights remain up, but go off. Side lights remain on, so these are ok! If I turn off the ignition and restart the car the headlights usually come back on. It is now getting worse to a point the headlights remain off, even trying to restart the car 4 or 5 times. Then, all of a sudden they work ok again!
When driving one night my headlights went off for 5 minutes and then came back on, without me touching a thing. This really sounds like an ignition switch problem, but could it be related to a relay or ground?

I appreciate the feedback!

When you start the car (momentary switch position 2) and the key springs back to position 1, accessories, it might not be completely spring returning all the back to position 1. The next time your low beams won't come on while the engine is
running, try your wipers and fan control. If they also don't work then what is happening is that the key is only spring returning about 90% back to the middle position. Very carefully turn your key counter clockwise about 5 degrees. You will feel a subtle click and then your lights, wipers, etc should work.
Mine is doing the same thing and I bought the plastic switch assembly for replacement but can't figure out how to release the rotory headlamp switch so I can remove the left vent and get to the old switch.

A good DIY tutorial is on the Renntech site. Do a search.
You problem might not be the same as what is going on with mine but it is worth a try. Spray some aerosol clear silicone spray down the key hole.

Because I have not repaired this yet (but can make the accessories work ), I am beginning to think it might not be the plastic electrical end connector but a wore out spring in the main ignition column.

You hit the nail on the head! If I quickly shut off the ignition and back on to keep the engine running the lights come back on. Thank you for you insight!!
