Backup is nice.

Mine has been an only car for a significant portion of its 5.5 years with me, though, took me across the country twice, no problem. The perks of starting with a very well cared for low-mileage one. ^_^

Now I have three roadworthy and insured vehicles. It's nice. The problem now is "which one do I drive?"

Single white middle class male American problems.

My 944 has been a good DD but the big thing for me is able to undertake projects without having to rush to finish so I can drive it the next day etc, especially when you get that "rusty bolt" etc lol

Oh yes, projects can be a pain on a daily driver.

New rod bearings, nuts, oil pickup O-ring, pan gasket on Mand's 87. Still waiting on the head... But moved the ball down the field. Mason, 12, directed the pan torquing sequence and decided he wanted to have the final go-round with the torque wrench. Did a great job and we had a really fun evening - he's a natural.

Winter wheels go on my DD tomorrow.

Winter wheels on DD. New air filter. Changed plugs - put in late 944 plugs. On startup the thing knocked like an SOB! Put old plugs back in. Knock gone. WTF?

Today with the help of my little brother I swapped the hatches on my two 944's (so the driveable one has the good hatch.) Now I get to try to restore an old hatch that's separating from the frame. Yay, fun. I plan to take the whole frame off, repaint it, and then glue it back on.

Or, you know, unload it for cheap on somebody who wants to do it themselves, since I don't actually need that hatch.

Also we cleaned the '84 (it looks a little better, but the paint is so bad...) and cleaned and polished the 924S, so the SRC is nice and shiny once again.

I took the center caps from the '84, painted them black, and stuck them in my black 928 wheels on the SRC. Looking good!

And ordered some stainless steel hatch pins.

@Porschenut924 - have fun with the hatch reseal. When I did mine (done a couple) I only did the top part of the frame, where it had separated. Lasted about 3 years and didn't leak. Be very careful, as the glass is very strong in some ways and very delicate in others. There's some good write ups on 924board.

I will definitely be consulting the gurus on that part of the project. Also, I work at a company that makes all sorts of display fixtures and other cabinet-like items for businesses all around the country--we have a lot of pretty awesome industrial strength adhesives.

Not actually sure if I want to take off the frame entirely or just mask off the glass, repaint, and then glue. It's only separating at the top, like yours.

Went over to my local specialist breaker and spent a useful hour removing a set of headlight frames and the rest of the mechanism. Stripped them all down on the bench at home.

Off to the electroplaters some time soon....this restoration itch still needs to be scratched!

Photos to follow as work progresses.....

rhett, nice. Are you doing the chromate conversion/cadium plating on the headlight machinist?

Hi, not quite sure what you mean 'headlight machinist'? However, due to the size of these parts I can't do them myself, so my local electroplater will have to. I will get them done in Zinc with a chromate finish, so they should look just like they did all those years ago. I wouldn't want Cadmium as that is rather toxic and expensive.

I'm betting "machinist" is auto-correct's version of "mechanism"?

Diagnosing Leaks

Today I put her up on jack stands and pulled off the protective plate so I could pin point leaks. The PS hose that runs from the left side of the car to the PS pump is sloppy when squeezed (fluid oozes out around the connector). Also appears to be some oil leaking someplace? Fluid appeared to be reddish (PS fluid), but proximity would suggest oil. Any ideas?

yeah, meant mechanism. I was planning on doing them myself, down the line, in large shallow but long plastic tub. But I haven't gotten around to starting the zinc plating experiments on any parts yet...
