78 - 924 Alternator / Starter fire and rewire
So I bought a 924 from a buddy about a month and a half ago. I drove the car, knew the alternator was feeling its age. Well after I got the car home a few weeks later I had that notorious problem of the alternator wiring being too close to the exhaust. and caught on fire. Wires grounded out. During inspection the other day, I have also found that the wiring to the starter was fried too.
Can someone point me in the right direction of building a new wire harness? I have two wires that I was able to trace from the pig tail & battery back to the alternator, and a third wire that goes from the blue wire, pig tail to the small post of the alternator. Is there any other wires that lead to the starter from the alternator? On the starter I found traced the main wire back to the positive. But I have two smaller wires (red & black) that look like they were in the wiring to the alternator? Last edited by Ataritoys; 04-24-2013 at 08:39 AM.. Reason: added image for more help |

Hi Ataritoys,
Welcome to Pelican! Anyway, here is a diagram of what you're looking for. A is the battery, B is the starter, and C is the alternator ![]() As you can see the larger set of wires that come off the alternator (known as the B+ track) connect to the starter at the same post the cable coming from the positive side of the battery. The blue wire is known as the exciter wire and it hooks up to the D+ post on the alternator. it goes to the alternator light. Your alternator will not charge without this all working including the light bulb. Good luck, Jrboulder 77 924 M&R Sunroof Delete 50k miles (sold) |

You can just get generic lengths of cable at any auto parts store. When I did this on my toofah I got some cable from napa with 5/16" ends on either end and used that from my alternator to my starter and then I got a generic battery cable with a 5/16" end and ran that down to the same post.
