What do I need to replace oil cooler?
I heard a noise and checked the oil and found some foam / milkshake in the dipstick and coolant tank. This sucks, but I didn't see any smoke coming out of the tailpipe, so its most likely the oil cooler.
I've read several different forums about this and have noticed that the bearing replacement is suggested. How hard is that? What about a radiator replacement? I know mine has been leaking slowly, and I replaced the flush screw which seemed to be the problem, but is it needed? (just another $-400). From what I have gathered, I need: Oil Coolers & Seals 1 Oil Filter/Cooler Housing Gasket, 944-107-147-03 1 Oil Cooler to Housing Seal, 944-107-153-02 1 Oil Cooler to Housing Spacer Washer, 944-107-154-00 2 Adjusting Shims for Oil Cooler, 944-107-219-00 2 Oil Cooler O-Rings, 999-707-043-40 Oil Pressure Sleeve Alignment Tool for 944 Oil Pressure Relief Valve O-Ring 1 or 2 of these? I would think it came in the gasket kit, but maybe not..? For the bearings, is it just the connecting rod bearings that I need to replace, or the crankshaft bearings too? I see in the suggested there is also a rod nut? Rod Bearing Set Main Engine Bearing Set, Std1 If i have to...Radiator I've also seen people say that you might as well do the timing belt, water pump, and HG while your at it. Thats a lot, why not just do a whole rebuild... I'm trying to do one thing at a time. This isn't my daily driver now, but it is in between film jobs, and I know this one is over at the end of July, so I've got a little time. Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated!

You are on the right track. The oil pressure relief valve O-rings do not come in the oil cooler seal kit. Rods do not need replacement - just the rod bearings. The nuts should be replaced too.
Some "while you're in there" items: You will be dropping the oil pan, so you may want to replace the oil pan gasket. There are seals for the oil pickup tube that you should replace too. Check the tube carefully for cracks. There are reinforcing kits available for the pickup if you are so inclined. If you ever want to track the car, Lindsey Racing offers a great baffle kit with a trap door to prevent oil starvation. You'll have the engine supported from above, so motor mounts will be easily changed when you drop the crossmember. Water pump and timing belt are totally separate tasks and doing them while you do this won't make either job easier. |

cro-cro,
Read this PDF and tell us if you have the OEM 3 piece OPRV or the "updated" (very expensive) 1 piece OPRV. Make sure you get the correct size "O" rings if you have the "updated" 1 piece OPRV. http://www.944online.com/pdf/oilcoolertech.pdf You have an 85.5 944. The alignment tool you posted is correct for the early cars. jwade is correct, you must change the oil pan gasket. Use the dental floss trick to keep it aligned while you replace the oil pan. Just more info: ![]() ![]() J_AZ

Thanks Jwade and John.
John, it says the alignment tool is for 83-86, so good, for a second I thought you were saying it wasn't right. It should be the OEM / 3 part original since mine is an 85.5 Is there a difference between these bearing sets? $196 or $72 but this one says I need 4... But it says it is a set...? I'm hoping I don't need this whole thing, just the o-rings for it... right? What I need: Large O-ring Small O-ring Is this the right set of nuts that need to be replaced with the bearing And this for the oil pan gasket? One of the two sets above of the bearings ORPV gasket set Alignment Tool Thanks!

http://www.944online.com/pdf/oilcoolertech.pdf You most likely have the 3 part OPRV because the updated part is very expensive. The only way to tell is to remove the OPRV and check. There are NO "O" rings in the early 3 part OPRV. There are "O" rings in the updated 1 Piece OPRV. GL J_AZ
