ticking noise in 87S
I have a ticking noise, the same as if a valve adjustment was needed, that comes and goes - the odd part is that it comes and goes and the idle speed does not change nor the oil pressure. I am going to look into it Saturday and thought I would see if anyone had any ideas beforehand. I have tried to listen when driving but the rain forced me to close the window and I tried leaning out with the door open, you know to hear if it was coming from the exhaust, but that hurt. So if anyone has any ideas about this let me know (other than seeing a shrink, I see one everyday when I shave)thanks, David

Almost sounds like carbon built up under the valves.
Had your belts done recently? AFJuvat

Yes, they were done less than 2000 miles ago; I am planning on checking the tension this weekend too; what are you thinking? Timing off? Not burning efficiently? Perhaps there is some chemical I can use to try and dissolve the carbon?

First thing I would try is flushing the motor out (the commercial motor flush works well) when you are changing the oil. It could be just a sticky lifter.
Failing that, and it is carbon, there is a way to decarbonize it without removing anything - will pass it to you in email (SoCal and Britwrench know what I am talking about) AFJuvat

Is this the "pour in four quarts of automatic transmission fluid, and run her like hell" that we have all heard about?
