Polishing Sewer lid rims

Just wondering if anyone has used one of the 'home' aluminum polishing kits that you use on your electric drill on their rims? And if so how did it turn out? And are there any 'tricks' to make the process more successful?

Thanks

iirc they are anodized so they will not take any polish for bare aluminum. You'll need to remove the anodizing first then they should polish up really well. Only thing you can do with an anodized finish is a clean with mild detergent and water, maybe an anodizing-safe sealant after cleaning.

I would not ruin a set of these rare wheels by removing their anodized finish. That finish is highly coveted and can't be restored to original condition again, unless you're willing to spend several thousand dollars.

Sell them and buy the kind of wheel you want.

The wheel is meant to go real fast, not to look so great. It is a forged wheel with an anodized coating

I would remove the wheel first so you can get to the slots and lug nut holes. Wash the wheel inside and out with car detergent. Try some Maguires aluminum wheel cleaner with a wheel brush to get the baked on crud off, and then finish off with a coat of Vaseline.

Check on Rennlist for some ideas. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/261765-cleaning-anodized-wheels.html

really? maybe it is the size on that 924, but sooo many 928 folks have ditched the man-hole-covers and I have seen them on ebay cheap.

I have a set of bronze finish off my 84 928S, 16", not sure of width but they take a 225 nicely. after a few years with the 17" rims, considering going back to them when the current tires are worn out. soften the ride a bit.

Yeh they are not rare, you'll have trouble giving them away. They are actually well made, light and strong, forged wheels, it's just they are so fugly compared to the Club Sports.

The wheels shown on the 924 are narrower (6/7") than the 928/944 versions. That might be what makes them rare. Those 924 wheels might be factory.

I added the 7/8" set to my 944S and they really help the ride and handling. Accordingly they were factory options on many of the cars.

I think the light blue 924 shown with those wheels looks about as good as a car could look with those wheels, the colors go together very well. If you clean them up post another picture.

I have polished a set of my bbs, It was really labor intensive. You have to start with 400 grit to remove the anodized finish and any scuffs then 800,1000,1500,3000,5000, and finally polish. Then regularly clean them but they were mirror finish.

Clear will chip and then start to bubble and spread especially on wheels, then you have to strip, repolish and apply clear again. Best to leave bare aluminum and occasionally polish.

I have a set of polished sewer lids that came on my turbo when I bought it. They're certainly very light but aesthetically I think I would prefer them to be anodized. Mine are clear coated. I changed them out for street use pretty quick but have kept them to mount track tires on.

Thanks for the info. When I read Ried's comment about them being valuable I got excited but the other comments are in line with what I've heard before. I also agree with 9FF I just find these rims fugly. And djnolan the car is actually Crystal Green not light blue. I guess it's the angle the picture was taken at that makes it look light blue. So I think I'll try to find someone with a non anodized set of these rims and see if they'd like to trade for mine.

What is the proper name of these rims?
Thanks

Is your car an '86? Sewer lids are meant for '87 and newer.....

Either way, those look like 16x7 ET65 928 sewer lids. Neither front nor rear look like the 944 wheel.

Hmm. Hallucinating. No such thing as a 928 Turbo, from the factory at any rate. Although they did make a turbo engine, for a boat.

Callaway did make a handful of 928 Turbos.

Come to think of it, surprised Porsche never did turbocharge the 928. I'm sure they thought long and hard about it.

My car is an 87. PO may have been pulling my leg with the name of the rims. Not sure what the ET is. Tires on the car are 205/55 R16's The polished sewer lids would be a great improvement on my car, imo. Anybody want to trade???

I'm not certain on the origin of the sew lids/man hole covers that came on my car, they were replaced by me as soon as I bought the car. If you're in central ontario, you couldn't be too far from me, I'm in Barrie. I have the polished ones that came on my car stored right now, but if you'd like them, you can have them. PM me and we can arrange picking them up.
