84 model, bought newer water pump and have conflict
So, putting new timing belts on and ordered the newer style water pump with the bosses for the belt guide, and also ordered the belt guide to install. I also ordered a 46mm water pump roller which goes with the newer style water pump. Thought I was covered.
I took the front timing belt cover off and I see conflicts. The back timing belt cover that is against the block (vs the front I've removed) does not have holes in it for the bosses on the water pump that hold the new belt guide I'd planned on installing. What am I up against here? Do I just punch holes in it, which is fine. Or once in there will I find other things that won't fit my newer style water pump that will require me to essentially buy an entire new timing cover? Pelican doesn't sell them, so I'd not be too happy about having to buy what is likely a $200 Porsche part just to install that little belt guide. Thoughts? Thanks.

I remember cutting away areas of the rear timing belt cover to provide room for the new water pump and guide features. Not a big issue.

There are a lot of 944s out there running without belt guides and that have not had problems. They key is proper tensioning of the timing belt and replacement and checking at the proper intervals. The purpose of the "belt guide" was to allow loose belts to slide on something without tearing the teeth off (you will notice that the closest gap on the run of the belt is right where the guide is located).
There was a tech bulletin which removed a large part of the back part of the rear belt cover back in the day, in order to remove some sharp edges that could also interfere with the teeth of a loose belt. I would use a dremel tool to open up the rear belt cover to accommodate the "belt guide."

Either cut out the one you have, or I might have one already modified I could send you.

disregard the purple lines, cut out the "hash mark" light-colored area in the middle.

Go to this forum and print these templates to cut out the section on your rear timing cover;

So just for clarity. Are you talking cut out the smaller area that includes the two circles with hash marks around them - the area where the upper half and the lower half have lines going TWO directions with the upper and lower patterns being different? And ignore the much larger area that has simple diagonal lines?
Thanks, Doug

yes the hash-marked/crossed out area, not the diagonal lines.
the entirety of the "update" was in the water pump area. |
