Another one follows me home.
'87 924S, 80,000 miles (?), limited service records, needs clutch master cylinder, fuel line off tank. MAACO paint job with some subsequent body damage. Bad seal on hatch and water in floor board. The motor cranks and reference sensor pulses. Seller was asking $1200 and settled for $800.

Yeah, I left the only ignition key at home (60 miles away) and the steering locked slightly left. We got it loaded and as far on the trailer as we could.

Drying out
The floor pan on this one was really wet. Passenger side mostly. The seat rails were rusty so it took quite a bit of PB Blaster to get them to break loose so I could remove the bolts. You just never know what you'll find under those seats. A PO must have lost her drivers license some years back. I got the rear carpet completely out, trashed the under layment and dried with heat gun. I'll let it sit open for about a week and everything should be dry. Also did some vacuuming in the engine bay. Took a peek at the timing belt - it will need replacement before I try to start the engine.

It's alive!
Nice day off yesterday in the garage. Changed the timing, balance and PS belts. That process took about 3 hours. Found some walnut shells in the air box when I removed that. Put on the fuel hose that the PO hadn't from the tank to pump. Put in a few gallons fuel, started cranking and it fired up within a minute! Oil pressure came up good. The exhaust blew out a lot of moisture in the pipes. The lifters were noisy until the oil warmed up good and then quieted down. The cooling fans kicked in at just the right temp. I discovered that the radiator and AC coil are loose due to front end damage. One of the brackets was bent back so I removed the grill and lower valance to straighten stuff out. That lower valance is a mess so I might look into finding a replacement (grill also). I'm really pleased that this one is running great after just spending $80 on belts.

Shake down autocross
Yesterday I took this 924S down to Huntsville and did 5 laps autocross. I found out a few things. The suspension is loose and it handles like a pig. I put on the wheels from the '82 931 with Hankook RS-3 and that helped a lot. The engine performed well, the transmission is good and the clutch doesn't slip. Half way through the heat, I check the PS reservoir and it was empty. When I got back to my garage and put some ATF in, it promptly leaked out the rack (good thing I didn't re-fill in paddock). Last couple of runs the engine began to cut out. I'm attributing that to junk in the fuel tank and I've got a fuel filter on order. I also ordered a reproduction intake boot as the on it is held together with electrical tape.

Power steering and electrical issues
So after the autocross I decided to see if the power steering rack was functional. Started the car up, added about 1/2 quart to the reservoir and it promptly leaked out. Okay... So then I investigated the electrical some. The turn indicators are completely non-functional as are the emergency flashers. I had noticed that there were some toasty wires in the rear harness so I sorted those out and spliced in some good wire. Still no blinkers. Then I switched the known good turn indicator relay from my '82 into the '87. No dice either. Fuses are good. I was messing around with the turn switch and I believe that's the problem. In fact the wipers wouldn't work either. So I pulled the wiper motor, opened up the gear box and motor, and both are full of crud. I cleaned all that up, re-assembled and bench tested - it's noisy as hell but it works. After I re-installed the wiper motor it's apparent that the switch is no good as it changes speeds but doesn't cut off. I'm looking for a good turn indicator and wiper switch assembly.
I found a junked '87 924S at a salvage yard and went to look at it. It's got terrible front end damage but the steering rack looked good and the brake calipers appear to have been recently rebuilt. So I cut a deal for the rack $50 and $25 each on the calipers (one caliper missing). I got those parts home and started in on the steering rack. I figured out that you don't have to pop out the tie rod ball joints - just screw the tie rod out. The salvage rack had one bent rod so I swoped those from the original. That salvage rack was definitely a re-build by looking at the tag. I had to get one new boot from O'Reilly's to go with the one good one out of four. I took a chance on the hoses and put everything back together, dumped in some fluid but the return hose is leaking bad. Both the original hose and the one off the salvage rack are cracked at the 180 bend. So I've got a new return hose on order along with replacement front sway bar bushing as the originals were soaked in ATF, swollen and cracked. I did notice that the tie rod ball joints from the salvage rack are fairly new so I'll replace those on the '87 as well.

Moving along dispite a rusty battery tray
Last week I got the power steering return hose on, the salvage steering rack back in and front sway bar on. I ordered the parts from NewParts.com and they're usually really good but the inner front sway bar bushing were not the correct size. The outer dimension didn't fill the drop bracket. So I fabricated some spacers from PVC pipe to tighten that up. The good news is the power steering is good with no seen leaks. Later I moved to the interior. The carpet have stains that aren't going away so I purchased a can of interior paint (yes, it can be used on carpet) in sand brown. The only other color choice they had that made since was white and I figured the light brown would cover the stains better. Out come the seats, vacuum the carpets again and then mask off the surrounding vinyl. I did the passenger side first and it was looking better. As I'm vacuuming, I noticed rust flakes below the AC unit. Well we all know what that's from. I pulled the battery out of the tray and there's been some patching done there. Looks like a coating of roofing tar with a roofing shingle on top (just when I thought I'd seen it all). So I rooted out that mess and there's two layers of flashing sheet metal below anchored with pop rivets. Dug that out and there's another layer of fiberglass. So I'm thinking, leave the fiberglass and add more with the cloth and resin (more like I did on the 931). Then I found where rust is starting come through the wheel wheel below the tray. I stripped back the rubber coating and there's about a 5' square of rusty metal. That's got to be fixed properly or more water is going to invade. So I cut back that rust to solid metal, took measurements and cut a section from the wheel well on my 914 parts car. Cleaned that section up, cut to fit, sprayed the back side with weld-through prime and welded in. When I mixed up the resin for the battery tray, I also coated that patch in the wheel well and painted with primer. I finished the weekend's work on that car by painting the drivers side carpet. Oh, I also was able to get all the exterior lights (except markers) working.

And the stumbling begins
Went for a drive several nights ago to see if the new fuel filter fixed the stumbling and that started again after about 15 min. driving. So I pulled off the fuel line at the tank and ran 5 gal. of fuel through it several times into a catch pan. Keeping an eye on the junk and rust. Not terribly bad but more could be residing in the tank. Then I back flushed the filter and put the lines back on to test drive. Same results. I suspect the injectors are clogging. I'll pull them this weekend and have a look. Still waiting on the replacement wiper motor and stalks.

Trade this one for '80-'83 924 NA
Putting out feelers for anyone wanting to trade their '80 thru '83 924 NA for a '87 924S. I've got a 924S driver fairly well sorted and here's a thread...
924Board.org :: View topic - FT '87 924S for late 924 NA. I'm looking for a 924 to prepare for SCCA Solo DP. Motor, drive train, suspension and chassis in good condition. Interior can be in poor condition as I'll strip it anyway. The body can have some dings and faded paint but no rust problems please. I'm in middle Tennessee so transacting within a 300 mile radius would be helpful. Reply to this thread or PM me with what you've got.

This is the next race car build!
A couple of developments on this car. Two weeks ago I got the R-134 adapter and was able to get the AC working. That was huge and made this 924S quite comfortable to drive. Except for the rattling under the floor board at idle. I was concerned that might have been torque tube bearings but I went under and listened to the cat. Sure enough the material inside the cat is rattling around. The cat is an aftermarket shorty with the label CATCO. A couple of nights ago I decided to pull the pipe and muffler post-cat and try to get that loose material out. This car is registered as antique so no emissions checks. Of course the three nuts and bolts on the flange were rusted solid so I had to grind off and drill those out. After wrestling the rubber hangers under the rear bumper off, I dropped the pipe, muffler and tail pipe (all aftermarket). Then I'm looking up the short pipe post-cat and seeing this white honeycomb material inside the cat all busted up. So in with a threaded rod and a lot of jabbing. Then start the car up and blow stuff out. I did that about six times until I'm down to one lump just slightly bigger than the pipe. One last start and I hear the lump wedge, constrict exhaust and then... POW! it blows out louder than a shotgun! Now the exhaust is unrestricted and flowing really well. And reving the car gets me to thinking...
This '87 924S runs really well, the EFI is easy to work on, it has all the desirable suspension, 5-speed transmission, 2.5L Porsche engine, etc. The only downside is that it classes in F Prepared when you strip it down and go light weight. But rather than dealing with CIS 2.0L 924 in D Prepared, I'm going to put on my big boy pants and jump into FP I'm developing my plans now on how to go about the build. Timeline, parts to be removed, parts to be sold or retained for my 931 restoration. Performance parts to be purchased or fabricated. I'd like to have this car ready for SCCA autocross for the 2018 season. I want it to be super light weight. HP isn't that important but suspension and handling is. Fiberglass body panels front and rear fenders. Lexan windshield and replace rear hatch glass. Aluminum race wheels. GOOD shocks, struts and springs. Fuel cell for sure. I'm going to drive it in stock form this summer and fall. Maybe a couple of regional autocrosses in stock class. Then this winter I'll start disassembling the car and storing or selling parts. AC system, wiper assembly, headlight assembles, door cards, side windows, rear seats, interior panels, dash, etc. All that will be coming off. Stay tuned gentlemen

Let's get down low.
So it's all in for this 924S F Prepared build. An interesting development last weekend though. I drove this car over to the 944 Orphanage to get some used parts and Todd discovered that it has a 2.7L engine transplant. I wrote about that here...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/926416-2-7l-924s-dme-questions.html I'm pleased with that discovery and I picked up some good parts. A 27mm front sway bar, a 17 mm rear sway bar with brackets and drop links, a 951 radiator and fan shroud and some 944S fuel injectors. During the last week I spoke to a very knowledgeable source who said going to a 3 bar fuel pressure regulator and larger injectors is not that great an idea - it will just make the car run rich. He recommend simply having the stock injectors cleaned and flow matched which I've done before and it does make a difference. I'll also get a 24-pin DME chip made with the future performance mods added to the mapping (exhaust, light weight flywheel, etc.) specifically for the 2.7L engine. Today I installed the rear sway bar, switched the front bar to the 27 mm, put on some rear Koni shocks that were on my 931, lowered the trailing arms and put on the 15" spider web wheels with Hancook RS-3. I also pulled of the rear bumper and hardware. I'll probably pull the front bumper also after road testing the new suspension. ![]() ![]()

Losing weight
Catching up on some photos as I strip this car for autocross. Today I removed the front header piece, headlight assembly, windshield washer tank, front facia and grill, AC condenser, dryer receiver and AC hoses. Tomorrow I'll meet another Pelicanite to purchase some fiberglass parts. I'll have some days off this week and should be able to continue striping the interior.

Header and rear bumper
I picked up fiberglass header panel and rear bumper parts yesterday. Installation was painless with the seller having already made brackets for the rear bumper. He had also done some modifications to the ends to fit 944 so those are protruding a bit on this 924S. However, the plan is to either fir fender flairs or 944 rear fenders so I'll see how that works out at that time. I also removed the AC compressor and installed a factory AC delete bracket. I'll need to get the shorter belt. And finally, I did confirm that this car has the original DME 944-618-121-04 which is important when ordering the performance chip.

951 radiator installed
This was a nice little modification. Took out the OEM radiator, checked the thermostat (super easy without the radiator), straightened out the brackets, made a few cuts and the bent the brackets to accept the taller radiator. Then I cut some sheet metal to make some gussets and welded those on. The brackets still were pushing out so I found some 1/2" square tube and welded a cross member. Added a couple of small blocks of rubber for the bottom and the 951 radiator fits very snugly.

Strip interior and install Konis
Moved from the engine cooling to the interior and stripped most of the carpet, under-layment and sound deadening material. That under-layment is nasty stuff and the glue Porsche used is really troublesome. I'll have to spend a lot of time with Goof-Off wiping that stuff up. I'm glad I did the floor pans as there's some corrosion. Noted that the front pan appears to be two layers. After I get a the glue gone, I'll wire brush, marine clean, metal prep and then POR 15 the whole pan.
Then the lovely wife ordered some Koni inserts for the front struts as an anniversary gift. The inserts that were in the struts - completely shot. This probably the fourth Porsche I've done this to and it's always a huge improvement. ![]() ![]() ![]()
