928 noise

I have a question about a noise coming from underneath my 1985 928 I thought it was a loose heat shield around the exhaust and put it on jack stands to check but they are all tight. The noise sounds like something turning and being bounced around, The noise does not change when I put the car through the gears in the trans ( automatic) any ideas? Thanks

You need to get it up on a lift and check it out real good. Is the noise light and tinny sounding or like heavy grinding metal or clunking sounding? CV joints will sound heavy an clunky. Torque tube noise will sound like a whine right down the center of the car that increases in pitch with speed. Something that sounds loose and banging around might be in the brakes like a loose dust shield.
