1981 928 Dash Button

I am attempting to help a friend tackle some wiring problems. He does not have the owners manual for the car. I have downloaded quite a few of the pdf's from the cannell site.

My question is does anyone know what the bottom button on the dash on the left hand side of the steering wheel is for? The top 2 are for lights. The bottom button is a pushbutton with a rectangular image on it with arrows pointing both left and right. Perhaps the emergency flashers????

Any help would be appreciated in whittling down the wiring mysteries...

If you've got a Euro, it should be the rear fog lights.
If not I think (I have a Euro) it's the Dash reset button.

From what you describe it sounds to be the USA model dashboard reset. It resets the odometer and on the digidash models ('89+) it also resets multiple trip counters etc.

just don't push the odometer reset button until you are ready to replace the odometer gear! Mine was like a sticky goo, but amazingly it was working until i pushed the reset button!..i still don't know how that thing was turning

depends upon year model and whether it's US or ROW/Euro.

It is a 1981 US 928. Automatic if that matters....

Its the self destruct button for the odometer.

I think that this car does not need "help" with a self destruct button. At least it appears that the motor and running gear is in good order. I am a 911 guy and how they so called engineered this car is a mystery to me.....

The thinking is frequently quaint. Consider this:

If your interior lighting ground isn't working properly, your rear hatch won't release with the hatch release button.

Logic: What's the point in opening the hatch if there's no light to see by?

Actually more thought out than that... Franz: "how can I stop some idiot opening thr rear hatch at high speed when he's actually only trying to adjust the headlights or fader control" Hans: " make sure it only works if he's already opened the door"...

All right guys.....I was wondering if I should have even made any 928 "comments" in my prior post. Not sure how hard anyone would jab back....

We are going to get the rest of the interior on this car together and most likely see if anyone around the Seattle area has any interest in a guards red (not factory) 928 that is pretty clean but probably has the usual gremilns to deal with over time.

So I should have not pushed that button a bunch of times? Car was not running or anything.

As long as you disclose it to any potential buyer, shouldn't be an issue.

from what I understand if you press the button when the car is moving the likelihood is a lot higher of trashing one of the odometer gears, eventually leading to the failure of the odometer.

I haven't heard of any other negative effect of pushing the button.

All the other comments by the way are just to help us 928'ers remind ourselves of how much we love our quirky cars :-)

Its just an electric switch - with the car not running you can press it as often as you like - nothing will happen - but eventually your finger will get sore...

Going to take it for a drive today since the sun is actually out in Seattle in December....

Since I have this thread going I have one last question. We have all the lights functioning except for the turn signal flashers. We have checked all the fuses behind the panel on the passenger side and all are good. I see in the wiring diagrams there is a flasher somewhere. That may be fried....

Can anyone tell me where the flasher control is? I can see it on the diagram but can not tell where it physically is.
