New 928S Owner

Hi everyone. I am the new owner of a 1984 928S (also own a English Triumph TR6; can’t we all get along -

Since I am a newbie, I have some general questions.

1. When I hit a bump or close the passenger door too hard the hatch pops open. Is there some way to adjust it?

2. This 928 is an Automatic, when you hit 3000 rpm the shift is a bit hard, it feels like it is "throwing" you into the next gear. Is this a vacuum adjustment I have heard so much about?

3. Simple one here…………being new to German cars, where is the oil fill cap? I have attached a picture (I think), is that it?

Thanks for any response…………coming of age in the 80’s and living in close proximity to where the Movie Risky Business was filmed, how could you not want a 928!!!

Welcome to the 928 adventure.

Lower hatch lock receiver sometimes can be shimmed, but eventually needs replacing.

Only thing I know on the AT is to change the fluid, filter, and flush and refill to the proper level. Good idea really to flush and change all the fluids including the brake fluid.

Yellow knob, and oil pours in through a metal screen.

Also essential you upload picts of you new ride.

If you look at the top of the canister that has the yellow knob you will notice that it says "oel". Say it aloud, sounds like oil doesn't it. It German for oil.

As for the hatch, it has adjustments but most of the time it is worn out. They can sometimes be shimmed to get them working for awhile but it will need replacing eventually. Check the part of the latch that is in the hatch ( top half of lock). Sometimes the sheetmetal housing will get a small crack in it and cause the symptom you are seeing.

Thanks!!!!

In order to shim, do you loosen those 2 bolts and shim under the plastic?
Anything suggestions on what shim to use??? Metal vs plastic?

Who would have thunk it..............oel means oil

As requested, here is a shot of the shark............

Interestingly given the font used if you try to read this upside down it appears to say 730 (not OEL). Conversly the english version with a siimilar font (less likely) upside down appears to say 710 (OIL).

So obviously German cars are better since they have 20 more "somethings" in the oil...

The firmness of your shifting is most likely due to inadaquate vaccum to the transmission.

There is a vac line that is at the rear of the engine, in the center, that comes up the bell housing. It will connect to a 4-7 way vac splitter. Ensure that this line is attached, then you will need to go through a vac testing procedure to see if/where you have leaks. When I get on my other computer, I'll post a link that shows how and where to do this.

If you have vac, then it gets a bit more difficult, but vac is typically the issue.

On the hatch, open it up and take a look at the white piece on the hatch its self. These can and do, wear out. It should be pointed, not rounded. You might be able to adjust the 2 bolts/screws on the lower receiver in order to get it to latch. Pretty easy to do.

Thanks. I will await your link!

I seem to recall some guys saying that removing a specific line to the vacuum regulator will enhance the firmness of the shifting, is that true? I know a leak is not good, but is the firmness in the shifting something to play around with?

Don't do that, it will do what you are describing and put excessive wear on the transmission.

There is an adjustment on the drivers side of the transmission, it has a black plastic cap on it with a pin you pull out and turn for adjusting the firmness of the shifts.

Ok, here's a bunch of links. I can't get to my other comp, so I just did some searches that should have the info.

This one is about the modulator http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=402994&highlight=vacuum

Decent with where to test, look at the pictures. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=173318&highlight=vac+diagram

One for your hatch http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=406401&highlight=vacuum

More vac links.

Some of these are not year specific, but will assist you.

That's gonna have to suffice until later. 20 pages of searching and I'm neglecting the wife.

Thanks!!!! Look like all the info should be found through the links.
I assume what I need to start with to address the rough shift is the vacuum system that originates off the top of the throttle body under the intake. How do you access this? Do you remove the air intake housing? To get to the line at the trans vacuum modulator do you jack the car on the drivers side?

Ah yes, wife neglect............I know that one!!! Picture the wife and daughter leaving for a "girls" weekend in the city, only to return to see a 928 parked in her parking spot in the garage.................oh the neglect

same car.

I purchased the same model in Feb 2008, 84S, AUTO.

I continue to drive my car to work 3 days/week.., and, as with your trans, my four gear is not functioning, though not at all.

Please repost your picture, here is my car:

Start at the brake booster and work towards the center, rear of the engine compartment. Good luck and if I think of anything else, I'll post it up.
