I see pictures of the short throw shifters for sale and they just look like sawed off stock shifters. Anyone know if there is any other difference besides the length of the shifter itself?

yes,
the short throw shifters are shorter, but they also increase the distance between the holes, this reduces the amount of throw required to change gears. should you not wish to spend the money on one of the fancy ones, a factory one can be modified for the exact same results. |

EIther way spend the extra $8 for Carl's handle adaptor so you can use any after market handle. The "Top" is horrible IMO.
Short shifter with Grant Evolution knob.

Shift knob I want to use has a threaded hole, not a set screw from the side. I think to use it I need to make my own adapter.

I cut down a stock shifter, and it was OK, but did not shorten the throw per se.
I installed the (commonly available) short shifter, and yes it's a good bit different. You don't use the springs, and the linkage holes are further apart than the stock one. It's nice a tight from the OEM shifter. I also installed Carl's ball cup adapter on the front shift rod, and holy cow it's really tight---works great, no slop in the shifting at all now. A big improvement. Rear linkage coupler was OK, so no need to mess with it. --Russ
