Dad's Crhistmas present
finally got to put Dad's Christmas present on his '79 (my powder coated intake--red), as well as diving into some vacuum/cooling hose issues (really rotten stuff!!!).
The intake job was pretty much straight forward, but the ensuing hose replacements got pretty interesting. Many of the vacuum lines were disconnected, and the minor cooling hoses were rotted to the core. It's wonder the weren't any coolant leaks everywhere. Did a little tuning up while in there as well, but the car really needs a new set of injectors/seals and finishing up putting in the leather interior (from a donor). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() --Russ

That looks really good, I like it.
Easier solution than what I did to Rogers '79 yesterday. Spent several hours with a chemical dip, scrubbers and my hands making his all shiny. How did you get the crest off for the powder coating? On his it looks like they used the most advanced adhesive around. Nothing I've done will take it off so I just cleaned the paint off of it and made is bright silver.

mine popped off with very little prying from a plastic paint scraper.

yes, the car is coming along pretty well.
the intake made a huge difference, although the "family" opinion was that it should have been yellow like the car. My own opinion is that if yellow, the amount of yellow would have been overwhelming. I thought the red would be a nice offset/contrast. There are still many things to do to the car to really get it together, such as replacing the bumper cover beading on both ends, filling the rub strip holes on the left quarter panel (a slight oversight by Dad), and getting the rest of the leather interior in (seats, door panels, rear quarter panels, hatch pieces, dashboard). We did get the headliner in just before I left for home, so that was a difficult job out of the way--the leather interior came from a donor car, so bolt holes and things don't line up the same. now, if I could just get him to put some wheel spacers on the back...... ![]() --Russ

Looking great. I'm torn between powder coating and polishing for my intake, but will most likely polish the stupid thing because I obviously haven't learned my lesson about the upkeep of polished aluminum engine parts.

well, you could sand, polish, and then clear powdercoat it. that would be the best of two worlds, and you wouldn't have to use anything but windex and paper towels to bring out the shine! then again, it you could get Alcoa to put their "Durabrite" finish on one, you'd really have it licked. Mmm......that gives me another idea to look into. Wonder if my Alcoa truck wheel rep can get it done........ --Russ

Where do you get the Porsche crest hood mat?
PS: The Airbox in dad's shark would look good painted either the same yellow as the car, or the same red as the intake. You can also get the hoses and plastic bits to look real nice by first thoroughly cleaning the engine, then spraying them all with either armor all type stuff(fairly regular maint. required to keep it looking nice) or you can use clear coat from a can(what most detailers do). the hood liner and Porsche crest is Rob Budd's product--you can catch them on eBay or his website.
yes, lots of little things to do on cleaning up the car, considering it was a basket case when we got. ![]() --Russ
