That thing is your air conditioning compressor. I would recommend getting everything else sorted before fixing your A/C.

Motor ID is on a flat spot at the middle of the top of the engine block in front, look straight down just to the right of the passenger side radiator hose and you should see it, starts with M28/.

Casting numbers for the intake runners are easy to spot, and there are four types.

Heads have casting numbers on the side towards the middle of the motor.

Wow, just... Wow.

Are those wires even the right kind? The only time I've seen that style of wire separators on the wires has been on 32V engines and those use different wires. Secondly, you do not want spark plug wires wrapped around a bunch of metal stuff, seriously! Third, they don't even appear to all be connected!

Yes, the "thing" without the belt is the AC Compressor, but you've got bigger problems than that. Get a set of the proper wires and go from there.

The green wire you have in your photo is not the famous $100 green ignition wire. Odds are, if it's never been replaced it's more of a yellow or brown now, at least that's how mine looked before I replaced it.

yeah....

Tuning: you don't know what an AC compressor is and you route spark plug wires like that? Did you ever stop to consider that a 928 may not be a good "fit" for your mechanical ability?

We all have to learn on something!

He'll either get it figured out, learn a lot and become an asset to the 928 community or he won't get it figured out and it'll end up being parts for the 928 community.

I hope you get it figured out. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even though sometimes doing say may lead to people giving you a hard time. It's always better to ask first before trying something so you can learn from the mistakes that have already been made. I know I'd be screwed if not for the on-line 928 resources.

EIP...that is a cool car! I love the color. I have the slightly later S2 car; I can't stay out of the thing!

Listen: this car, when you get it running right...is unbelievable. You hit the rev limiter and it is still getting stronger! These were a no-sheize substitute for a small airplane. That's why they were built- this was Porsche's first private "airplane". Contrary to popular belief, but this is NOT a "sports car", it is a "GT", or very fast transport instead of a toy. Some companies in Europe were known to buy 928's in a effort to keep travel costs down in their marketing departments. It seems that in Europe, a good 928 was way cheaper and actually faster door-to-door than a Beechcraft King Air.

"The fastest you can go and not eat airline food"

Good luck. And know this- time and energy spent on this car will result in payback!

haha. and ouch.... i may only be 16 but i have done ALOT of mechanical work. this is my first German car that iam digging around under the hood on. the damn thing didnt even run when i got it. much less have working brakes, cooling system, nice tight suspension..... to me (after what i have done to the car) this is getting into the details. now to explain the wires... that was the only way they would reach the spark plugs. i bought them a LONG time ago from Kingsborne and i dont have the order slip anymore so i couldnt return them. so i figured i would make due. they arent touching anything that moves so dont worry about that. i was planning on taking them off and putting the OE back on since i think the wire that goes from the distributor to the ignition coil has gone bad from sitting in my closet waiting on the 928 to get to my house.SOOOOO.... i understand what you guys are doing and thinking and feeling and i would feel the same way if i was older and more experienced and had a kid come asking me stupid questions on a car that iam very passionate about. but please understand..... iam a young kid, but i dont build or work on cars like one. here is a list of my previous projects. ALL OF THESE WERE BUILT, MAINTAINED, RESTORED BY ME call me a lier but i know what i have done and accomplished.

First off 1923 Ford Model T-bucket fiberglass replica. Ford 302 small block with a BDS 6-71 blower. all aluminum frame and block. 6-71 blower pushing 18psi down its throat. full mallory ignition c6 trans. custom 22.0psi meth injection system. posi lock rear end blah blah blah............ i built this car from ground up. bought a frame and started from there. assembled the motor at a local garage that had the necessary tools and equipment.

(only pic so far..)

2004 VW R32

(no pics) 1969 VW Mires Minks with a Porsche 914-6 motor.

(no pics) a friends 1991 DeTomaso Pantera with a 351 Cleveland rebuild.

i have some experience. not like you guys', but i think its worthy of answers from people who know what there talking about.

ill put the OE wires back in and see if it doesnt fix it.

I have a spare set of wires that look to be in pretty good shape that Brendan more or less gave me. One wire is missing, the drivers side rear. If your OE wires don't take care of the problem let me know and you're welcome to the set I have.

Lay out those red wires, take a couple good photos of them and if they can be confirmed that they're for a 32v engine you might be able to recoup some of your money. I have no idea what the 32v wires are worth though.

That's cool that you like VW's too. The car prior to my 928 was a Corrado SLC, with the VR6 engine. I had the Autotech chip, the Neuspeed exhaust [GAWD that car sounded good with that pipe-!], and a home-made cold air intake. It turned a 14.98 at 94 mph at the strip one time, and it had no problem at all covering ground at three-digit speeds. I wish my 928 had that light steering!

I live in Fort Lauderdale, but work for Fedex in Memphis. I keep a car in Western Tennessee, and guess what? It is a '97 Jetta with that wondrous VR6 engine.

-The only problem with that car is that it is such a hooligan that the suspension can't keep up with the motor! And that criminal under the hood is a really bad influence on me: "hey...what about another 1000 rpm? And you know, we're doing 75...but I can go 100 and you'll hear my beautiful voice a lot better! Lets go baby..."

dammit! I'm such a slut~

hahahaha!!!. yeah man i love VW's. im a sucker for the sound of a VR6. its like a magnet for me. you know they should have a bib or drool catcher that is bolted to the headliner to catch ones drool as he drives and listens to his VR6 cause im tired of showing up to pick a date up with a slobber-soaked collar!

P.S. i saved the last part of your previous comment on my signature....just too good to let go by. i gave you credit of course! D

You know, that would be a good commercial for VW: A bib.

-You see a bunch of executives walking into a big building, carrying their brief cases. They all look exactly the same, and this is in black and white. Suddenly one of the clones shows up, and he's wearing a bib.

Next scene: there are 99 black Mercedes in the parking lot, and one GTI.

The next scene? The GTI owner is licking his lips [you only see his lips] in the elevator, and all the clones are looking at him funny as he laughs...
