I GOT IT OUT!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOO!!!! HAHA  OH YEAH

ok, moving on... what do i need to do now? what do you guys need to know? the balancer it at o/t right now, im not 100% sure wich piston is at TDC, i think #1 but the timing mars on the cams do not line up.

should i remove the belt and rotate the cams? i think the balancer has to be at a certain angle and then i have to set the cams at a certain angle but im not sure.

This time just stick a long screwdriver carefully in the #1 cylinder to make sure it's on top. If not, spin that crank (by hand) 180 degrees till it is on top.

Report back with position of all timing marks.

this is easily done-

you can actually see the #1 piston at TDC when looking into the spark plug hole with a light. the balancer should be at o/t.

once you have this accomplished, then check your cam gears. if they line up, notches to the casting marks, all's good. if not, remove the belt and adjust/rotate the cams until the marks line up--according to the FWMs as we have described previously. reinstall belt after everything is lines up. then double check your work.

you are very close to getting this thing up and running-- ;)

ok, so i decided not to stick anything into the cyninder from now on, i took a maglite and positioned it so i can see the piston while turning the engine. i got the #1 to TDC and no tming marks are to be seen. i see just orange on the balancer, and no notches on the cams. im pretty sure its all 180 degrees off.

paintballer317 08-08-2009 10:36 AM

just to make sure, i rotated the engine again until the #1 was at TDC and still, same thing, no marks

rotate crank while watching the piston and bring it up to TDC again. your balancer marks should show o/t.

ill try to take pics to show you

paintballer317 08-08-2009 10:43 AM

ok, decided not to take pictures cuz it would be too hard to take one ofthe piston.

i watched the piston come up, and start back down again and stopped.

i loked at the timing marks, cant see any.

rotated again till i see the piston come up, then start back down and i stop.

i loked, still no timing marks. the balancer is upside down. and the cams are off. its set for the #5 piston not #1

paintballer317 08-08-2009 10:45 AM

when the balncer is at o/t, the #1 piston cant be seen. its down all the way

OK, let look at this again.

Are you checking piston #1, which is the passenger side front cylinder? not the driver's side.

If you are good on this, pull it to TDC and check balancer.

ok, ill take pics, haha

so now what?

rhjames 08-08-2009 11:20 AM

this is #1 cylinder (just like in your picture)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1249755096.jpg

balancer timing marks--notice you read this while standing in front of the engine looking down--it the marks are read-able from the rear of the car (as if you are sitting on top of the engine), the balancer is on backwards

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1249755196.jpg

passenger side cam timed OK--notice gear notch lines up with casting mark

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1249755344.jpg

driver's side cam timed OK--notice gear notches line pu with casting marks

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1249755419.jpg

What I need you to do next is this:
rotate engine until you can see balancer marks---do you see any at all?

if so, make sure you can plainly read the marks.

rotate balancer (engine) until the marks line up TDC. check #1 piston location--look into the plug hole as before--is it up or down?

if down, rotate engine 360 degrees, line up balancer marks.

then check the cam marks

i can see marks plain as day, when i line of the pointer with the o/t on the balancer, the #1 piston is down. i have to rotate 360 degrees to get the #1 piston back up to TDC. so no matter what, the o/t mark is when the #1 is down, and nothing is shown on the balancer like in my pic, when the #1 is at TDC

and you timing balancer marks look like this:

O/T

rear of engine this way ^^^^

???

can you post a picture of the balancer and it's marks at O/T please??

--Russ

paintballer317 08-08-2009 11:45 AM

when standing at the front of the car, looking down, the numbers and letters are upside down. theres a good pic of mine on page 3

rhjames 08-08-2009 11:54 AM

Got it---

balancer is DEFINITELY on backwards---

I should have caught this!!!! (in the previous pics)

VERY sorry......

How to fix:

remove crank pulley and balancer, invert balancer reinstall.

the crank bolt takes a 27mm socket and about 350 ft lbs torque (it will seem tha much!!!!) to remove. when reinstalling the crank bolt, make sure to torque to 218 ft lbs---a dab of Locktite won't hurt.

once completed, then you can go back a time the cams.....

holy crappo--

do i need any special tools? i heard something about a flywheel lock. i also need to remove the belt wich means to remove the tensioner? can, you give me like a step by step through this?

rhjames 08-08-2009 12:12 PM

yes, you will need a flywheel lock. available from 928 Int'l, 928 specialists, etc.....

insert flywheel lock into lower bell housing cover (where the clutch slave cylinder would go), then use a very long breaker bar and 27mm deep socket to break the crank bolt loose. upon re-assembly, just reverse using large torque wrench torquing to 218FT lbs. minimum torque.

Sorry I didn't catch the mistake in your previous photo!!

wonder if the previous owner had done this and hit the proverbial brick wall, gave up, and let it sit...?

who knows.....

you're on the right track now.
