928 Auto trans refill

What is the best way to refill an auto trans in the garage with the car on jacks?

Not sure of the best way.

What I've been doing is getting the car level on jacks, then filling from the right rear using a funnel/hose arrangement.

Same process for differential. Here, I'm doing both.

Easier with rear wheel off. I fill running in neutral, brake on. I have cycled it through forward and reverse before, very carefully, then checked level in neutral and filled that way. If you turn off the car during filling, the trans fluid will overflow.

On the 89, it is a little tricky because the heat shield obscures easy view of the reservoir. I think you are dealing with a muffler there, too.

This is what I do, right or wrong. Except its supposed to be level.
You can snake the hose through the spring, on towards the fill cap.
Careful to pre-clean the cap and the body undersides above the cap to prevent dirt entry.
Plug the hose so it doesn't get dirt jammed into it while routing.

Find a small gear oil pump at the local parts place. Use it to pump ATF to the reservoir. I add a section of clear hose to the pump, so the pump and bottle are out from under the car. I add a plastic tie around the exhaust pipe to hold the hose in place. Pump until full. Start the car for a few seconds to let the pump refill the torque converter. Pump until full. Star the car for a few seconds. Pump until full. Repeat until starting the car no longer draws the level down too low. Leave the engine running while you top off the fluid to the cold level mark on the reservoir. Lower the car and go drive it a litte to get the trans up to temp. Recheck the fluid level at temperature and adjust as needed.

There's a thread archive of a RL post That gives the whole ATF swap and fill procedure in detail:

Fluid and Filter Change

Yes, I used Dr Bobs suggestion. I bought a pump from Harbor Freight and climbed under the car on jacks and pump away. I like this method since you can see how much is going in, when the funnel outside (if doing this alone), your not seeing it overflow if you pour too much. The good part with the funnel way is that it's a lot safer not to be under the car while it's idling.

I would also offer a warning . When your running the car through the shift detents make sure to keep your foot on the brake as well as the E brake engaged.
It is quite possible to have one of the rear axles turning and going form a drive selection to park can cause the park pawl to cause catastrophic damage to the transmission.
This is similar to putting the car into park while its still rolling
