Sorry to say, but I cant help with the piston. I have two US spec (dished) pistons available, but all 8 euro spec pistons are destined to be put to good use.

I finally have the interior in a drivable condition(front seats are still bad). It's kind of a mix and match but looks ok to me. I can always upgrade later. I am going to cover the car for a while and try and find a job. I am a laid off pharmacist. This restoration doesn't pay too well as my wife will attest. I am still in a wait and see position on my damaged engine and still need a piston.

Dude- you are doing GREAT with that car! Keep up the good work.
I was laid off from two airlines in the past 10 years; the first time for 6 months, and the second for 8 months! I used the time to do a lot of things I'd wanted to do for years, like travel, work on the car, and visit my family. In fact I changed out my motor mounts and steering rack during my layoffs. I was up most mornings until 3 AM posting on websites, working on my car, drinking beer, and faxing/emailing resumes. And I had a GREAT time! For what it is worth, the two companies that laid me off were both 4th rate operations. I'm an airline pilot by trade. I wound up working at a 2nd rate operation with BIG airplanes that eventually allowed me to gain a job at what is arguably the BEST airline in the world to work for. You'll probably have a similar experience- a small amount of adversity will motivate you, and you will wind up finding a job FAR better than what your previous position could give you. Put out those resumes! And keep working on your 928! N! |

I jumped the big black starter wire to the jump post and got power for the first time. Very exciting pushing all the buttons to see what I had.
-Head lights rolled great but right one's burnt out. Can't get fog or taillights to work(except tail blinkers work-forgot to check break lights) -hvac blower works at all speeds and hvac controls light up -windows work but passenger won't go back up-looks like the arm that moves in the channel is out and missing white wheel -all dash lights work(in German) except instrument lighting -all wipers work except front wipers won't shut off unless I push the stalk in -mirrors don't work(rt one makes a little noise when I toggle down on lt and rt setting) -horn doesn't work -no illuminated symbol on headlight knob -can't find lock button or hatch release button -interior lights and dash box lights work -sunroof tries to move(I didn't try too long) -clock and cig lighter aren't hooked up yet -cruise relay makes a noise when cruise activated-good sign? Turned out better than I expected. |

Sounds good.
What are your major need-to-have items now? I have a tan passenger S4 seat with good leather, no odors, nice. I wonder if your early tracks would fit it? (it was a donor for tracks and motors) Will be in W-S in a few weeks, will try to bring it.

I have been working on the interior and electrics. I have fixed about everything electric that wasn't working(put new guide roller in pass. window guide and used a cut piece of roller blade wheel aluminum bearing and a nut and bolt instead of peening the end of the included one-worked like a charm). I did alot of work on the front seats to make them somewhat usable till I can get them recovered. Drivers side was a mess with a bolster almost gone. I used spray foam to recreate the bolster and then shaved the foam to the right shape. I then patched over the bolster and other areas of the seats with salvaged leather from my old 1/4 panels using Gorilla Glue. I have redone the headliners and they look ok except for some warpage issues. I know some of you will be disgusted (I am a little embarrassed to show you.)by my poor mans engineering but it is a huge improvement for the time being. I have fixed the rust issues and put some paint over it till I can get the correct paint job in the future (embarrassed a little about this too). Gunar

Do what you can to help you enjoy it. Doing strange fixes is better than ignoring problems (in my opinion).

The beauty of the repairs is learning what is there and how it all fits.
And now that the rest of us can see what you are working with we can search our own parts piles for spares. Am leaving very shortly on a parts retrieval expedition extravaganza and so your pictures are timely.

Ive been following this project and must say was very hopeful for a rebirth of this 928. Now that youve assesed the condition of things mechanical I hope your passion for it doesnt wane..
Its shocking that such an incredibly expensive and beautiful machine would be abused, neglected and discarded. Good to see someone at least try to rescue it. |
