Limping to a Stop -
One of my front brake calipers started to chatter a little - when I pulled the wheel I found that the anti-chatter spring bar was missing. Would anyone have this piece - it simply clips into the two holes on the near side of the floating caliper and has two opposing long fingers.
In the photo - it is the rectangular plate in the center. You can just make out the long finger extensions pressing against the lower edge (top and bottom) of the caliper base. Miss Purdy (84 Automatic - std. brakes) is limping a bit and getting some odd looks as she chatters up to a red light. Any help in purchasing this part would be appreciated. Thanks, Michael

Tack Weld -
Wow - For the last couple of days I've sent inquiry emails out to every new and used Porsche parts suppliers I could find and not one response. Has anyone tried making this part from an old leaf spring or tack welding the calipers down ?

84 would have S brakes, the ATI or something like that, maybe just get a whole rebuilt caliper?
Why/how did the part come out? |

Hey Danglerb - How the spring bar was lost is a good question. Of all the restoration time and money put into Miss Purdy, the brakes were actually found not to be one of the major issues. Since the pads were almost new - all that was needed was a thorough brake line flush and new fluid after the initial purchase. This part may have been unnoticed and missing from the previous owner. Then again - perhaps my high speed cornering was beyond the expected engineered capabilities of the 928 and it dislodged by centrifugal force. Yea right - Michael

Next Higher Assembly -
Started looking at rebuilt calipers but evidently many do not come with any pads, hardware or attaching parts. I’ve been told that the only piece I actually need is usually not included.
In most parts breakdown diagrams if a part is not available you simply go to the next higher assembly. A used caliper will be the next step up. After that comes a complete car. At least my wife can say that she has not heard this excuse for another project vehicle in the driveway… Update: Dodged the bullet and saved my marriage once again - instead of having to buy a parts car and probably sleeping in it for a while, German Auto Dismantlers in Georgia came up with just the part I needed. Sorry for all the sniveling and whining - thanks to everyone for looking…… Michael
