Damn, that car has been through hell and back! I think 5k is a bit high, given its condition.

I wouldn't use it for parts.

Unique 928 -
Hey riber.bentsen, From the owners description and at least 10 years of sitting with an open top, this cabrio sounds like it would be quite the project. Offer free towing as a starting point. I'd perform a very thorough inspection of the body and jack the car at each corner (one at a time) to look for any stress cracks along the door sills and inner wall joints before getting too involved. Then try to track down some ownership history and who did the convertible conversion. With enough time and money it could be a very unique car if everything checks out and you can get it at the right price. Like it has been said several times previously - many of us have invested $10,000 to be driving a fine $5,000 928.
For a fun knock around project I’d make an offer for the VW bug sitting beside the fence. Even with a (crazy) down market - a restored super beetle sold for $6,250 on eBay a while back. Somewhere around 1979, just as the old air cooled beetles were being phased out, VW had a fire sale on bugs in Montana and a buddy bought a super beetle off the showroom floor and out the door for $1,900. Good Luck, Michael

I'm not looking into buying this heep, I simply stumbled across the add. You don't see these so often, if ever. And the conversion looks to be done professionally.
If I had unlimited time and money and it was right around the corner from me, I'd maybe give it a go. Unfortunately I have neither and it's 7.000 miles from where I live

What a shame!!! Why would anyone leave a CUSTOM convertible car, regardless of make, to rot out in the open! I know the type of person; a family friend had a 944 with a bad water pump, rather than fixing it he let it sit outside for 9 years. And btw, it had a bad seal somewhere (which he knew about) so the leather interior is now shot to hell and covered in mold, who knows about the electrics... damn shame.

This cabrio looks like a piece of pure junk.
From a mechanical perspective, sand and grit has a knack for getting into combustion chambers and transmissions, even if its through breather holes a couple grains at a time from the wind. What absolute crap this car must be. The odor alone of the interior of a rescue-candidate 928 coupe can be a real dealbreaker for me at any price. |

I totally agree that it's a total piece of junk. Then the other side of me want's to take it on as another project. Good thing it's way overpriced!

Opelotus, you're half right - that car has been through hell. I don't think it made it back...and it looks too far gone to be a project...it's a shame.

Two offers ?
Is the owner trying to imply that after this car sat out in the weather rotting for 10 years, he is firm at $5,000 minimum ? If the owner has had two offers of $4,500 for this thing he would be really foolish not to have signed the title and race to the bank with sirens blazing - before the buyer sobered up. I still think free towing was a reasonable offer.
By the way I believe that old 911 in the background of one photo was run through eBay earlier. He had done a little superficial body work but it was in about the same condition as the 1978 928. Michael |

Worth less due to adulteration during conversion, not more, in my view.
If I was local, he'd have to give me a signed title (so I could be sure its owned) + $500 for me to rid him of the headache. $100 for trailer rental and gas, I'd make $400 and hopefully come away without a rattlesnake bite or scorpion sting. Probably wouldn't try to take parts of it. |

wow I think it would be cheaper to buy a 928 that runs well and then convertible it...... not that I'd want to see this rancid violation done to any 928.

Cutting the top out of a 928 SERIOUSLY reduces the rigidity of the chassis, leaving the car suitable only for mild driving.
