Yes, it's under the car. Although no need to check level. Get the transmission Filter Kit from 928 Intl and some Dex/Merc Castrol Trans Fluid and drain the tranny and torque converter.
Inspect color of fluid, report back. If all is nice and clean, re-assemble with new filter and fluid. Top it off, then start the car and get it to operating temp as you monitor and keep filling the tranny reservoir. It should stop dropping in fluid level, now with the foot brake on, move through all your gears, put back in park. Go under and see if more fluid is needed, keep doing this till fluid stays at reservoir max level marker. Put car back on the ground and test. |
Ill try to do that tonight, although im not going to put any money into the transmission until i atleast know that it is going to hook up. Ill see if the stuff is burnt or not and then put fluid in it.
The car came with another transmission, but how do i determine if its a 3 or 4 speed? |
Look for a part number on it and post here!
|
I think '83 was the first year for the 4 speed if I remember correctly. If the old Mercedes Trans doesn't shift and move the car, check the linkage. The 4 speed 928 trans is a pretty tough old dog.
|
Neil30076, part number is 126 271 2001.
924carrera,83 was the first year. I'll be sure to check the linkage when I get a chance. Thanks!!! |
I do not recognize that number, but as you say it is MB #.
PM me your VIn and i'll tell you what it should have! |
neil30076, just left the other house that has the title and car at it, so I don't know the vin. I know what it should have, as 83 had 4 speed auto only.
|
The 928 Automatic is a Mercedes trans in a Porsche gear box. They are pretty tough but sensitive to correct fluid amounts and valve body clogs. They can also leak from the torque converter seals in the front of the trans. This doesn't mean they don't still work in some fashion.

when i looked under it, the reservoir was full. so i dont know.
|
The car wont start, it fires every revolution but will not keep going..i recorded what it is doing but do not know how to upload it. Any idea why it is doing this?
|
The relays or power source to the fuel injection. There is a fuel pump relay, and a fuel injection system relay. If the injection relay goes bad the car will start up and die quickly. More specifically does it fire and tick over once or twice or just fire but not tick over? Check your ignition system if it fires but doesn't tick over a couple of times. The 928's Bosch Jetronic computer can go out completely but most of the time it's down to relays.
Also I wouldn't jump the relays except in a pinch. You need to use relays. If anything, pull your relays from other unimportant components to get the fuel system and injection up to speed. Mark them and put them back when you find some Bosch relays in a U Pull It. |
The transmission can look as though it has plenty of fluid until you start the car and shift it. While your lovely assistant shifts it, look at the reservoir and see if it stays on the max mark on the back right side of the reservoir. Important!!!!! Make sure your assistant keeps the brake on while shifting it through the gears and back to park. Set the emergency brake too. Be careful! The fluid should drop and then rise back to max after you shift through the gears. That's if you can get it running again first. Usually low fluid will mean the car only shifts to 2nd gear, but nothing else. This still sounds like linkage to me.
Good luck! Keep at it. The 928 is not rocket science. |

The number thats useful on the tranny is the one stamped into the metal on the bottom kind of between the axles. The raised number is something about the case casting, but those can be common to more than one type.
|
Sometimes it will start and run for 20-30 seconds, sounds like it is running on 8, then you give it gas..it takes it find but when you let off it dies and wont start again...
MPDano, i guess i will go make a youtube account. |
Well, it is just an audio clip and when i upload it to youtube, and then copy/paste the link into my browser, it says it doesnt exsist. so i dont know how to let yall hear it.

You may have a loose/faulty ground for your L-Jet injector computer. This ground (the most important ground in the entire car save for the battery ground) is terminated at the passenger-side valve cover right above the letter "O" of the name "PORSCHE". This screw that holds the ground terminal in place is hidden under the air valve mounted above it. The screw secures the mount of the air valve and also the ground terminal, and you can't see the screw for the valve above it. I got lucky and discovered that mine was very loose (by touching the valve and the engine would instantly stall). You can't see the screw. You have to reach under the valve and feel. I removed the screw and relocated the ground wire and terminal to a location that was easily visible and reachable. I also added extra grounds. Adding one to the distributor made a big difference in running quality and smoothness. Verify this ground, then move forward. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1310766527.jpg |
When i get a chance, i will check that. Thanks!!
