I do not recognize that number, but as you say it is MB #.
PM me your VIn and i'll tell you what it should have!

Sorry if my reply to this comment made me sound like a bit of an ass..

" just left the other house that has the title and car at it, so I don't know the vin. I know what it should have, as 83 had 4 speed auto only."

Thought you were saying that to determine whether if it was a 3 or 4 speed in the car. Might you have the part # for the 4 speed so that i can determine what the extra transmission is without having to get under the car? Thanks!!

Make sure the relay to the Jetronic is good, MPDano is right, power source to the fuel injection. My car did this when I first got it running too. It turned out to be the relay.

1982_928 07-18-2011 12:37 AM

Thanks!! I will be sure to check this when i get a chance.

924CarreraGTP 07-18-2011 02:27 AM

Its relay number 8 on the top row. Let us know if you get it going.

MPDano 07-18-2011 07:19 AM

Yeah, jumper that Relay. If that doesn't work, check the grounds under the passenger side smog hose. There are a couple on top of the cam cover. It's a lot easier to get to and clean if you remove the metal smog tube and Diverter Valve.

I can't remember if the ground just runs one back of Injectors since this is why my car was running so bad when i did the Intake refresh. Only the drivers side injectors were firing.

1982_928 07-18-2011 02:03 PM

Alright, i will try that.

Since it will start some times, and runs good when gas is poured in it, would it be the timing? it doesnt crank any faster or any slower than a normal 928 so i dont think the the timing is retarded or set too fast.

MPDano..Im just going to take all of the smog stuff off and throw it in the garage.. It is annoying, in the way, and pointless to have on the car. Thanks!!

Actually, the guy that i got it from had like 10 928's and when he was looking at it and we were trying to start it, he looked at it and said something like "doesn't have a fuel injetion relay.."

He went and got one out of the parts car, but i don't know if he took it back out after we tried starting it, or if the relay itself is dead. I'm leaning towards the relay, because sometimes it will start and run on its own for about 30 seconds, takes throttle and all, and dies and just does what it did in the video.

also...How do i put the cars that i have under my post like all of you seem to do?

924CarreraGTP 07-18-2011 03:54 PM

I just said not to jumper them because of the irratic pin needs of 3 way jumpers and the sort. Relays are easy enough to switch out. If I remember correctly number 8 relay is a 24. There are many in the 928 fuse box.
Also I believe relays are made to fail in case of wiring shorts. If you eliminate the relay, the system can't shut down and you can burn your wiring instead of relays. Then you're in for a very good time.

924CarreraGTP 07-18-2011 04:08 PM

After all you never know what chevy mechanic got ahold of the car and tried to switch wires or do other ridicules things to MAKE it run.

1982_928 07-18-2011 04:14 PM

Well, You never know. Maybe i will be that chevy mechanic messing with the wiring...Own a couple (elcamino, corvair)

924CarreraGTP 07-18-2011 04:38 PM

lol Well the 928 is not much more complex. It just has relays and fuses that run everything. This confuses some people. Most of the time the 928 wiring is bulletproof. It's just weeding through the relays and fuses to make the systems run. I put a battery in my car and no turn over, starter relay. I replaced it and it turned over but no fuel. Relay didn't fix it, so fuel pump replaced. Then it did exactly what you said. It started but quit every time, so the injection relay fixed it.

Well, at the moment it seems rather complex..When i get a bit more used to it, it wont be as bad.

lfausty, i never found a notifications drop down menu

The LH is a little more complicated. No doubt about it.

I think i may have figured it out.. Do i put it in the signature?

Yep, that was it

1982_928 07-19-2011 09:27 PM

Got to mess with the 928 today, and was going to switch around some of the relays (fuel injection and such) but there aren't any other relays that look like the #8 relay which is suppoed to be the fuel injection.

I switched around some of the relays with "24" printed on them but that didnt help anything.

I had it running by squirting gas out of a bottle into the engine, and after i ran out of gas i went and felt the #8 relay..It was rather warm. Hotter than a normal operating relay would be..So i guess the relay is dead?

(i switched the #9 relay which had the correct number of pins, and didnt have any luck with that.)

also, i had a bad ground at the ground cable, so i grounded to a different spot in the back of the car so that it would crank. The ground on the valve cover wasnt loose, but i didnt have a chance to take it off and clean it because it was getting dark.

I should be able to work on it thursday through sunday night so i will be doing most of my diagnosing then.

Does it sound like a relay or a ground?

Danglerb 07-19-2011 10:23 PM

Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

924CarreraGTP 07-20-2011 12:22 AM

I just switch the relays around until I find one that is working and will function the Jetronic and fuel pump. You can match them up by the terminals on the original relay. Also I found in that situation that getting the engine to accept light throttle while running for a second, made it run better and better. If all else fails, do what these dudes have been saying and run a 3 way jumper. I'm going from my experience, not what is logical in a pinch.
I have a box the size of my head of spare Bosch relays for Mercedes and Porsches. It might be better off for someone without such things to make jumpers. I just dig until I can plug and play.
A relay getting hot is not a good thing. I have a fire extinguisher in all of my Porsches. Due to the complexity and pressurization characteristics of the fuel systems I feel that every Porsche should have a fire extinguisher handy.
When working on open fuel systems, I have a water hose handy too. I learned this when an '87 944 I was working on caught fire.
Keep playing with it. The fuel pump has to produce fuel for the car to run, and the Jetronic has to produce engine manangement for it to stay running. Still sounds like the fuel pump, or the Jetronic relays.
In summery, you must get the fuel pump to produce fuel pressure to the engine with either a fuel pump, a relay, or both. After you know for sure its getting fuel to the fuel rails, the Jetronic has to have a good relay and function. On top of that various engine sensors have to be working for the car to run. The Air Flow Meter, the Crank Sensor, etc. I would make sure you have all three components of combustion first.
Air, fuel, and spark.
