Anyone willing to lend me their flywheel lock?

I've got a 79 auto and wanted to see if there was anyone in the Portland area that would be willing to lend me their flywheel lock?

Thanks!

They are not that expensive and if you keep the car you will need it again. I would buy one if I were you.

You don't need one ? just use a 1/2 Impact Gun with a Impact Socket that fits tight and plenty of Air pressure ( like 120 ) comes right off. Only way that wont work is if you have a crummy Gun.

I was going to try that actually but I'll have to move the radiator out of the way so my impact gun will fit. I've got a decent gun so I expect it'll do the job. Id rather not buy the lock if I can avoid it.

I can lend you mine, but that's $10 to and from. The $50 investment for the Tool is worth it. You will for sure need it again in the future. Your call.

If the impact doesn't work out I'll pick one up. Thanks for the offer but it only makes sense if I were borrowing it from someone local.

If you are doing the timing belt you must make sure the crank does not move after setting everything and the flywheel lock prevents it from moving. Not sure why you are removing the harmonic balancer, if that is what you are doing.

You're saying I don't have to remove the harmonic balancer to replace the tb? I dont see how it's possible to slip the belt in/out without removing it. I'm using http://www.928intl.com/repair/T-belt1.pdf as reference but had the engine out and apart when i did it last so I didn't run into this issue.

Yes, HB "must" be removed in order to get the lower TB Cover off. Also, when putting the HB back on, make sure the writing reads towards the front of the car. A lot of backwards HB stories out there.

Yes, to remove the bottom cover you need to remove the HB. However, since you are doing the timing belt, it is important that the crank not be moved once you have it set at proper position. What I did was set the crank and cams at the proper position to remove the belt, then place the flywheel lock on and then remove the balancer. Once finished with the job, place balancer back on and remove flywheel lock.
