they don't fit well and buckle. To install properly without cracking, it is best to remove the dash. My car had one when I got it and I immediately ripped it out.

They are JUNK!!!
Put one on a 924 for a customer and it buckled and cracked in less than a year.
STAY AWAY.

Ty,
If for some reason you are determined to put one of these on your dash, I will gladly sell you the one that I have had in my garage and never installed for half what the one on Ebay is selling for.

My '83 had one as well. It was melted and buckled. Possibly glueing it down from the first installation might keep it from looking terrible in the near future, but then if it still buckles its glued to your dash. Too bad... lol Maybe if your car is going to sit in a cold garage this might be an okay idea. There's a leather shop that does 928 dashes. It's like classic9leathershop.com or something like that. Google it.

In Hemmings they will redo a camaro dash for about $80. They wanted $600 for the 928 years ago, but would guarantee it. The problem is that it's a big aluminum sheet under the vinyl and leather, and that's a solar collector, any way you look at it.

Good luck.

Dash Pad Overlay -

Hey Tychain, Naturally, replacing the original leather dash covering with new leather would be preferred. Just about everyone has read a number of write-ups by 928 owners who have tried the dash overlay and were not happy with the long-term results. While helping a couple of friends take the less expensive option - I have installed 4 dash overlays that turned out very nice even after several years on the road.

Although it’s considered a fairly major operation, first remove the complete dash onto a work bench. After the old leather outer covering, the defrost vents (along the top and at each end of the dash) are removed - you’ll have the original factory padded dash remaining on it’s metal under frame.

Thoroughly rough up and cross hatch the exposed original dash pad using a drill and small wire wheel. Fit the overlay into position a couple of times as you trim off any edges or raised padding that may prevent a perfect fit - then apply lots of a good quality upholstery glue to mate everything together. I used thick folded bathroom towels across the complete dash with an assortment boards and “C” clamps to hold the new dash cover tightly in place while it dries a couple of days.

Perhaps the one's who were not happy with the long term installation of the overlay used a silicone glue - the 3M upholstery glue we applied is holding up well so far. One other comment - None of these cars are daily drivers and are parked inside most of the time. Perhaps this is also a factor in the satisfaction of these owners.

Just my opinion - Michael

I don't think I would use leather for the dash. My 81 was pulling away from the vents by 1986, so I am thinking maybe Alcantara. Rob did an amazing looking dash with Alcantara around the vent area and leather below the bend/seam.
