I am late to the thread, sorry...the shaking could be your motor mounts are SHOT. In the video when you rev the motor the engine does not rock even a little bit. Totally gone MM at higher rpm will feel like the car is coming apart. Just a thought.
I am an old guy I guess at 52 and I can not tell to much about how it sounds running. Can you record outside so the sound does not echo so much? I also did not see the cross brace in the engine bay. Are you driving without it? Not sure if that would contribute to the shakes ( along with worn MM it makes sense it could to me anyway). |
Hi Dean, thanks for the input. The crossbar is back on. Once she was running again, I put her back on the ground and put everything back under the hood except for the intake tubes because for some reason it was having a hard time kicking over with them on. The MM's had crossed my mind, but I thought that if the mounts were bad, the engine would shake whether at rest or in gear with the rpms up. Is there some kind of check I can do that might tell me if they're definitely shot? I understand the mounts are quite the project and there's a lot of WYAITs to do while you're in there so the budget can get pretty stretched as well. Not to mention, I'd hate to get all the way in only to find they're not in that bad a shape and it's something else.
I'll try and get an out-of-the-garage video some time this week. |
Actually, I think you may have something here. If you look back in the 1st pics I posted here, I believe they show pretty clear that the oil pan is sitting well under the crossmember when I think they should be pretty much flush, correct? It's the last couple pics in the post.

Hey guys, remember me?! It sure has been a while, a lot went on in the past 5 months and the car got the hold put on it. The company I worked for (small investor-funded cancer research) ran out of that all-important 'investor funding' and abruptly closed up shop early August, so I took some time off and spent a lot of time at the shore enjoying being a new dad. The boy is doing great, 8 months now! So then the search was on, thankfully short, and I'm settled into a new place and I'm ready to get back to business.
So where we left off, I had some wicked vibrations that Dean mentioned could be the MM, and I thought he was probably right. So the parts are on their way and we'll be swapping them out, and doing the oil pan gasket at the same time. Need to do some serious clean up while I'm under there too. Looks like next weekend is going to be the swap, but I'm going to try to get under there periodically during the week to get the ball rolling. So we're back it! Thanks Dean. I've been studying Dwayne's write-up for a while now. Between his and Dave Anderson's (SharkSkin - Shark Attack Round Twenty-Five - Rack, Pan Gasket, Engine Mounts) write-up, I'm feeling pretty confident I can get it done. Any cleaning tips for getting the nooks and crannies under there? As you can see, there's quite a mess of oil to clean up.

I am one of the rare birds that uses WATER and degreaser freely on my motors. A lot of folks will not and I can understand that. I have never had a no start after letting the motor completely dry out...which may take a day or 2. Faster in the summer.
I use a product called Brown Royal...but I think any good degreaser will work...just don't leave it on too long. I also have a small car brush and old tooth brushes that I will get in all the corners with. Its just time. Once you get a new oil pan seal on...it will stay cleaner. Go with the silicon and not the cork one. The cork just does not last IMHO. I JUST finished the MM's and oil pan seal on my 89. Still waiting to finish the TT and trans install. |
I def went silicone. I don't want to have to do this again for a long time.

I started to dig in with the limited time I had this weekend. Following Dwayne's write-up, I lowered the sway bar, got the replacement plate off and lowered the steering rack. Pics not great, taken with my phone.

At that point, I gave the lower MM bolts a try, but my brute strength was no match. I'll be borrowing some air tools this weekend to finish out the MM/Pan gasket job. So in the meantime, in an attempt to better my rough running, I swapped in a new fuel filter and o2 sensor tonight. The old sensor fought the whole way out, but I got it. New one is in and wires are run inside. The grommet is being a PITA, and with the sound proofing, it's difficult to get any leverage on the inside. After struggling with it for 20 minutes or so, I figured I'd call it a night and mess with it tomorrow. |

MM & Pan Gasket Day 1:
Pan Gasket is on. The crossmember came out relatively easy and the mounts popped out. More on that later. Getting the oil pan off was a trip. The bolts in the front are a PITA but after much time, patience and an obnoxious amount of oil residue raining down, it came off, and it was disgusting. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358649035.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358649080.jpg I cleaned it up as best I could, but there's so much it's never going to be perfect. I fitted the new gasket, and on the 2nd try, got it to mount up without the gasket flopping off. Took a ton on the front bolts again, then got to the rest. The driver's side front corner bolt is still out right now. It's probably the most difficult to get in, and either the gasket is in the way, or I just can't push it high enough for the threads to catch. Either way, I want to punch it, so I called it for the night to regroup. About the motor mounts, the new ones I got from Roger, they're the Volvo mounts. Is there a way to make sure everything will stay lined up? Also, the safety hooks are not supposed to touch, correct? These new mounts seem taller than the others and the hooks actually keep the lower plate from sitting flush on the bottom of the mount. Help me out! Thanks. |
I think after there is load on the mounts...the "hooks" will be fine...If I am following you correctly.
You may have to raise the motor more to allow the fresh mounts to bolt up. As far as the pan and seal...I used a stud kit I had in my parts box for 5 years now. It was very easy as the studs hold the seal in place while you raise the pan. Those front driver side bolts are a PITA but just take your time. I also removed the alternator bracket and belt. That gives you a little more room to work. Looking great so far. |

Thank you for the link Stan! Daddy duty called yesterday since my wife took off on business for a couple days, won't have a chance to dig back in till Wednesday and hopefully get to try the new mounts this weekend.
Once the mounts are back in and it's all buttoned up, I'll try pulling the alternator bracket and belt to get that last pan bolt back in and then tango with the damn grommet for the o2 sensor. Thanks for the input guys! |
You will be amazed at what a difference the new MM make, so much smoother.
Since the wife is out of town you could try putting the oil pan in the dishwasher for a few cycles ... *** Try my suggestions at your own peril, exercise maximum common sense, and leave plenty of time for recovery if needed prior to spousal return. |
The mounts are IN!!! Didn't get to dig back in until today and after about 6 hours and a lot of expletives, the mounts are in and everything is pretty much buttoned up. I just have to do the sway bar, that last oil pan bolt, and the o2 sensor grommet tomorrow, then CLEAN. It's quite a mess out there. I wasn't able to get any pics in process, but I'll grab some from underneath tomorrow. There is a huge difference in where the engine sits. It's probably 1/2-3/4" higher.
I ended up doing a hybrid of Stan's write-up and Dwayne's getting the CM back in. I followed Stan by having one mount bolted up to the engine and one on the CM, but I was still having issues getting everything in. So I jumped to Dwayne's and removed the sway bar and disconnected the LCA from the lower shock mount. Went in lickity-split after that. After bolting everything else back up, the mounts were still lined up to the alignment holes so I breathed a hug sigh of relief. I used my jack and a piece of scrap wood to push the CM up to get in the support bolts, a few hits with a hammer and in they went. Overall, reassembly was pretty smooth. Really appreciate the help from you guys on this one, it's the most ambitious job I've attempted thus far, and at this point I'm feeling pretty good about it. Can't wait to try them out, but alas, the snow has begun to fall. Next up is the steering rack. I would have done it now, but I'm going rebuilt and am trying to space out parts purchases. Popping the rack in and out this time was a good dress rehearsal. Pics tomorrow. |
