Glad to hear it.

OK here we go:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fhS5AWXbSO8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The rattle from the PS pump is still there. The belt is tight so it's something internal. Is it worth attempting my own rebuild do you think? Or should I just pick up a rebuilt pump? There is still a very small hiccup. In the video, you don't hear any putter on revs which is good. However, if I slam my foot to the floor, it almost dies before it revs up. I think I can attribute this to a vac leak somewhere. Again it's only when I immediately floor it. The white smoke from the tail pipe subsided a little bit and may not be an issue anymore. Another thing I checked into yesterday was my ATF leak. 2 small ones seem to be coming from easy spots, the reservoir and the return line. BUT, I got some drips through the TC grate and it's not coming from the drain bolt. Methinks I'll be pulling the trans at some point to replace seals! If everything on this car worked the way it should, I think I'd get bored not fixing it. |
Yup, that tc area leak is common. I too need to drop my tranny to fix this. Its the main pump seal and it get's hard due to the location of heat. I got all the seals to do both my trannies but no flat location to it just yet. I need to relocate stuff piled all in the middle of my garage first :(

The white "smoke" is actually just water in the exhaust vaporizing, or water from the air, no worries! :) It's one of the bi-products when combusting gasoline. You can only see it because it's still chilly outside, just like your breath...
Congrats on getting the car up-and-running ;) |
Rebuilding the PS pump is easy and cheap with a seal kit but it sounds like you will need a new bearing a well.
Agree with Leo...its the Trans pump seal. Just hard work to get to it. You will need to drop the trans obviously. I would replace the TT bearings and TC bearings while its apart if you have not done so yet. You will have the car in great shape soon. |
Rookie with a new project
I'll probably fix the easy leaks and save the front seals for the fall. I need to get some decent drive time in this summer.
In the vid, you can hear it still has a little bit of a hard time starting up. Could that be a vac leak issue as well? I sniffed around with the stethoscope but couldn't hear anything glaringly apparent. |
Check to see if the fan has any wobble.

Rookie with a new project
Fan is all good. Tires are on and she's on the ground. Backed out of garage and there's a nasty noise when I turn the wheel either way so we still didn't make it out for a ride. What's the chances I can rebuild the pump myself? Worth the effort, or should I just get a rebuilt one?
|
The kit is cheap so I would give it a try. The noise may be your out of fluid.
I think Roger can email a video to you on how to rebuild one if you get his kit. The kit only includes seals . If a bearing is bad, that will need extra attention. |
Pulled the pump out last night and have a seal kit on the way. You can hear that something isn't right inside, when I turn the pulley either way, something inside makes a little rattle. Once the kit arrives, I'll get going on it and see what's what. In the meantime, I replaced the reservoir and hose to the pump which have been leaking for a long time so a good clean-up in there is an order too.

Fantastic news! After beating the crap out of the pump to get the back plate off, it came apart. Nothing looked too bad inside, but I pulled everything out, gave it a good cleaning, put in the new seals, and put it all back together. Tossed it back in the car, buttoned up the alternator and the belts, topped up the fluid and fired her up. SUCCESS!! Rattle is gone, no noise in the steering. So I took her out for a good thrashing. For the 1st time in almost 6 years, she hit the highway pushing 85. New mounts are great! Still has the goods when the foot hits the floor, still pulls looks from other drivers and still just as fun to drive. Suspension leaves something to be desired, and the trans still shifts a little slow moving between P->R->D. Saturday was the day I've been waiting a long time for, I owe a lot to everybody here who's helped me out along the way. Thanks!
Now I have to get the windows to work, with no AC it got pretty hot in there. |
