garaged
Just bought a 1986 928s.
It has 70,000 miles on it. It was parked 6 years ago and hasn't been started since. It ran when it was parked. What should I do before trying to start it? |

Drain the gas out of it, If it smells bad. 6 years ago we didn't have Ethanol in the gas, so it lasts forever. Pour some card cleaner in the tank (SeaFoam), and go. Be sure to check all of the fluid levels! As soon as you get it roadworthy, put fuel lines on it and have a timing belt put on it (Unless you want to do it) because if they snap, your engine is toast. People will say to have your injectors sent off, Just clean them yourself and save the money for needed repairs.
Good luck!

Remove and clean gas tank.
Replace all fuel lines. Send injectors off for cleaning. Change all fluids. Replace timing belt and water pump. Then comes the electrical...but that may get you running.

Dean, gas was good 6 years ago so that probably isnt needed..
It takes longer and costs more for you to send the injectors off. Clean them yourself.

10% ethanol has been in my area since the late 1970s and by 1980 there pretty much was no choice.

Dean is spot on. Do everything he mentioned and pay special attention to the brake system.

Even though it was garaged pull the air cleaner and make sure there's no nests or creatures living in there or your intake runners (the plastic ones to the airbox from the front of the car).

It doesnt matter if it does, so you dont really need to check. If it has ethanol or any additives in it, it would be bad. Just smell it and you will be able to tell.

My recommendation is to pull the plugs, put a teaspoon of oil into each cylinder, put a 27mm socket on the crank bolt and turn it over slowly clockwise by hand to visually inspect the timing belt through the air tube vents (holes on top of the cam gear covers) before even attempting to crank the engine with the starter
If you see even 1 little crack, DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OVER WITH THE STARTER. If you do, that 15 seconds of glory could cost you thousands of dollars in bent valves and top end rebuilding costs. Better safe than sorry. Good luck

Gas was good 6 years ago, when did I miss the press release on that one? Gas has never been "good" stored more than 6 months or so, but a bigger concern is the coolant, and this "running" it was doing when parked, was it running "well"?
Do you have any repair records? Have you done a carfax and autocheck report? Why was it parked? Why is it being sold? Do NOT try to start it, the 86 is an interference engine and any issues with the timing belt which should be changed every 5 years or 50k miles, can be very expensive to repair. What are your intentions for the car? If you plan to sell it, stop doing anything, close to 100% of anything you do will greatly reduce your profit. Wash it, clean and condition the interior, find a buyer. If you plan to keep it, and have the money it will take to fix it regardless of damage you may find once it runs, stop doing anything and have an expert with the 928 look it over. If it is a 70k mile car, not a 70k mile odometer, that has a big impact on the value, but condition is still the primary factor, and that needs expert eyes to decide. This is where I would start if I was going to keep it. That is the biggest question, is it the 928 that you want? To honor and cherish, and dump truck loads of money into? |

Post engine pictures and those of us who awaken cars like yours will tell you definitively.
Post electrical panel closeups too, with the wood upper and lower doors removed (passenger footwell).

The previous owner had a tumor removed from there neck, and wasn't able to drive for two years. Never started it after that. I will post pics when I get it towed "home".
