Lol@the prices. But.. I got an inspection just so I would know exactly what I'm dealing with. He said the wheel bearings are the most important thing. Is there any reason he wants to charge $200 labor? Shouldn't that be a 15 minute job?

Wheel bearings are not real easy. I did mine a couple of months ago in two+/- hours, but I have a press and a lot of tools that not everyone has. On your estimate a couple of things come to mind. Firstly the labor for changing the front rotors and pads and the labor for changing out the wheel bearings tends to cover a lot of the same ground. Secondly, the rotor price is pretty stiff...as I recall 2 rotors from Roger last summer were under $200. Also, your transmission holds more like 8 quarts of oil if he drains the converter, which he should do. And are the pads for 2 wheels or 4? If for 2 wheels he is doubling up the parts prices, not all uncommon in car repairs.... the prices on your estimate are not horrible, but they are "enough".

So do you have to have a press/other tools to do it? Or should I just pay to have it done? My dad said he's done it no problem, but not on a porsche.

And is there any reason to have a German mechanic do the bearings? Or can any good mechanic do it?

And as for the pads, I don't know. We just did replaced all four a couple years ago (MAYBE 1,000 miles)

Parts prices seem quite high to me. I buy some of my parts online here in Canada and checked out some to see how they compared.

These are Canadian prices (I buy here in Canada when I can as the delivery is quicker than going through customs from the US). I have bought a number of parts from this place (clutch, pressure plate, starter, etc) and have had excellent service. I didn't check Pelican, but imagine the prices are similar.

I wouldn't call the replacement as "no problem". It is not all that hard, a press is not necessary, just helpful. The inner race is a bit difficult to remove from the spindle, I was able to remove both mine with a solid whack of a 5 pound hammer on a chisel on the parting line between the race and the spindle. The outer races I was able to tap out of the hub with a robust punch and hammer. Some instructions call to heat this and chill that to reinstall the new races, I have not done that as they are a minor interference fit and will readily press in using a press or using a vice with an appropriate sized socket on the race to push it in. It looks worse when written out than it really is to do it. Just not a drop in bearing like it is on some other cars....

you should not need pads again then...some body may be "padding" the bill a bit. Pun intended!:D

not unusual for a shop to double the price of parts used in a repair.....pretty much normal practice around here at least....cost x 2 +labor=your repair bill....:eek:

Yeah I almost always buy my own parts. I haven't has dealings with this guy before, but I have another guy that I know does good work and us honest. He did my timing gears, water pump and timing belt.

And I read that you should not flush the transmission because it can cause premature transmission failure. Is this true?

Covered this ground before, German mechanic means nothing, Porsche mechanic nothing, lots of 928 experience or plan on paying them to learn.

Stuff like wheel bearings and brakes are jobs I would be doing myself, but having someone else or someone elses equipment to do the press work.

Ok, so my neighbor just finished the job, got my rotors turned, new brake wear sensors (one was completely severed, possibly why my "brake pr (!)" warning light was on?), repacked bearings, and drained/refilled transmission/torque converter.

So he says it's idling rich (He can smell it!) and that's probably the reason I'm getting 9 MPG. By the way, I'm getting 9 MPG. So he said it might need the injectors adjusted and a full tune up, but he doesn't no how to do that as it's much more computer--y than he expected.

He also mentioned cutting out the catalytic converter (my dad seconds it!) -- thoughts on this?

He ALSO mentioned something called a "sharktool" or some such thing. He said it allows you to control everything in the car and some people have reported getting up to 28 MPG, and it costs about $1,000. I think I've heard of it.. not sure.

Anyway, is it possible (relatively easy) to do a tune-up? As nobody in Oregon knows anything about the 928.

Sharktuner on a 1982? Good luck on that. Check your fuel pressure. If your Injectors have never been serviced, well nows the time. Send them to Witchhunter.

While your waiting on them to finish, do all the tune up stuff (plugs, wires, rotor and cap, filters, etc)
