Request: Post-Purchase Inspection - San Diego
Just got my car last week via truck shipment. I originally wanted it to be checked by the shop, but it hit me that I want to go to Sharktoberfest and it would be a good idea to have it checked PRIOR before going on that 2 hour drive.
Anyone in San Diego can swing by and do a post-purchase car inspection? Beer is included ![]() Do note: The car has cigarette smoke, and that smell will take a while to clean if I can clean the smell out. So don't wear your nice clothes.

Fabreeze can help, SD is a big place so more precise location will help plus model year etc.

Rancho PQ in the deep end.
North of Mira Mesa, south of the 56 1986.5, pretty much mostly stock and have receipts on everything. Fuel lines changed same with TBelt from prior owner. I dont have a car lift if that means anything. Going to do the "cleaning" method, but I did buy fabreeze as a intermittent nose saver (scentless version) Last edited by eijun; 09-30-2013 at 03:14 PM.. |

Smoke smell will never be totally gone, but you may be able to get it below your personal level of tolerance.
Who did the belt and fuel lines? If the tension on the belt is good, and its tracking properly, should be fine to drive it up with just a generic safety check. |

I know, I do plan to do full interior exchange so I am not too worried in the long run, its the short run my nose has to suffer.
The prior owner did the fuel lines and belt, and tbelt check. Well the place I wanted to go to is Greg's shop which is a 2 hour drive, that itself puts me to worry about anything the prior owner forgotten or anything that was installed wrong and a 2 hour drive is LONG. Hence I rather get a basic post purchase inspection now by a local 928 owner, then when the time comes I will drive it up for a normal full inspection (that is AFTER Sharktoberfest, yes I will be driving it up to it too) |

For starters. Post a bunch of pics of your car. Put your year and color of your car in your signature like we all do. This helps us in all your posts, so we don't need to ask that.
Do you trust what the PO did? I wouldn't unless I personally or someone here knows them. When posting pics, take close ups of the front fuel lines near and under the coolant reservoir tank. Remove the top timing belt cover and take close ups there. Take pics of your 24 pin (opened). Go through all the grounds. If an auto, replace the trans fluid and filter. Replace the oil and filter. Replace the fuel filter. Most likely needs an Intake refresh of all the vacuum and rubber. 86.5 is interference. I would "not" trust that belt unless you can verify it was recently done. Plus, water pump. Better get moving if you wanna get this all done prior to Shartoberfest in Anaheim.

I bought it from Shane from Rennlist which he bought from Mark at 928Int after his prior car caught on fire (both in a separate thread) prior to selling he has 3 928s. Here are the ads on the car I bought:
5 speed for sale - Reutterwerk Forums 1986.5 5sp manual w/lsd - $9280 - Rennlist Discussion Forums more pictures: Reutterwerk Forums - Shane's Album: Vincents' '86.5 5sp manual w/lsd Will take pictures when I get home, if I can find the correct areas to take. (first time owning a 928, so it might take a day or two to find the areas that you guys are requesting. Hence having someone come by inspect and show me what to look for and guide me would be quicker... while I can offer a beer and likely breakfast at maybe the Broken Yoke nearby)I did say he did change out the tran oil to the proper type right before shipping it (the reverse gear has a knotchy problem and it had crappy tran oil beforehand ie likely rust), I did check the engine oil levels and it looks clean. Yet to check the filters, and he said he just recently had a intake refresh. Yet to look at the receipts, will do today. Need to double check the tbelt if it shifted during shipment on the truck. First thing I need to do today, is give the car a wash (car was on the lower rack, so engine oil dripped on the car body and who knows what else and it is full of dust from the shipment and the rain they encountered via shipment) Last edited by eijun; 10-01-2013 at 10:43 AM.. |

This is his ad from 12/2012. If all this is true, you should be able to do a cross country trip. I wouldn't worry about and make the 2 hour drive to Gregs shop.

![]() Thinks like pulling the drivers side top timing belt cover before driving down will ok so I can see the belt. Have you Registered it yet? Just wondering how it will do in smog.

Pull the ashtray for the center console or one of the side panels. I once had a car that always smelled of smoke even after repeated cleaning. Eventually I pulled the center console and saw a pile of ashes that had fallen from the back of the ashtray. Once removed, the smell eventually went away.

Oh the one next to Autozone, got it. Let me figure out a day (that is not this week)
Got it. Washed my car, and next plan is to take out the dash+center console for cleaning |

Pull Dash for cleaning? What for? That's an intense job. Ask me how I know.

Ash tray + burn marks + lingering smoke + prior owner is not a smoker = cleaning time
Plus want to fix the odo, and clean electrics and double check connections (aftermarket alarm was removed before, and so is the radio, so I really not too trusting on the connections under the dash) |

Can we do this, meet up at the pizza place eat then I drive you to my house for the inspection then drive you back to Best Pizza Place?
Nope not registered yet, hence me scared of driving it in broad day light (early morning and late night I might be able to pull it off but kinda cant inspect it due to lack of light) |

After reading Leo's post above, this car is ready to go cross country per the 12/2012 ad.
Seems you need a smog and to register your nice 928. Then up to Anaheim on the 19th.

I'm just going to verify a few key areas so we can make sure it'safe to go to Sharkfest or Gregs. We'll let Greg do the official PPI, especially anything under the car, which is really not much unless your experiencing leaks.

Get AAA, it's cheap and don't forget your driving a 30 year old or close to car.
